Postdoctoral Fellow

Postdoctoral Fellowships
EMBL Heidelberg

The Furlong group at EMBL, Heidelberg seek an ambitious postdoctoral fellow to lead an interdisciplinary project, focusing on heart organoids and single cell genomics. The appointed candidate will establish human cardioids, starting from iPS cells, and develop protocols that mimic both human heart development and genetic heart disease. The project is a close collaboration between the teams of Eileen Furlong (Head of Genome Biology, EMBL) and Johannes Backs (Head of Experimental Cardiology, Univ. of Heidelberg).

Your role

The project entails working with our collaborators to establish and further develop protocols to differentiate human iPS cells into three-dimensional heart organoids. You will lead exciting studies using state-of-the-art single cell genomics methods, and spatial omics, to uncover the expression and regulatory changes during the in vitro development of a three-dimensional heart tube. Integrating in vivo data from human heart tissue, and bioimaging, will elucidate how well they mimic different stages of heart development and assess unexplored variation in developmental trajectories. This postdoctoral project is highly inter-disciplinary, and can be – depending on the qualification and the interests of the candidate – entirely experimental, or a “hybrid” experimental/computational biology. You will join a highly collaborative, diverse and international team

Why join us

The proposed project will provide the successful applicant with a great opportunity to develop expertise in the organoid field, in a model that has direct implications for both embryonic development and disease.  You will also gain expertise at the forefront of single cell genomics and spatial omics, and be able to lead this project in different directions.
