Research Technician - Functional Genomics

EMBL Heidelberg

The research group of Lars Steinmetz seeks for an ambitious research technician to support our work on CRISPR/Cas9 based genetic screening in human cell line model systems.

Your role

The research technician will develop and optimize next generation sequencing and CRISPR/Cas9 technologies to elucidate the functions and mechanisms of transcription, and molecular systems underlying diseases.

Your responsibilities will further include:

• Testing, developing and evaluating new tools, reagents and experimental protocols, in particular in the field of next generation sequencing and single-cell technologies;

• Establishment of CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing in human cell lines models including induced pluripotent stem cells;

• Working in close collaboration with the EMBL core facilities and our partners at GSK/Cellzome to optimize the aforementioned protocols;

• The Research Technician is expected to contribute to scientific projects at all stages, ranging from experimental design to manuscript preparation.

Why join us

This is a fantastic opportunity to work in a team at the cutting edge of technology development in a very exciting area at a world leading institute. EMBL, Europe’s flagship laboratory for the life sciences, is an intergovernmental research institute with more than 80 independent research groups across six sites in Europe. We are an inclusive, equal opportunity employer offering attractive conditions and benefits appropriate to an international research organisation with a very collegial and family friendly working environment. The remuneration package comprises a competitive salary, a comprehensive pension scheme, medical, educational and other social benefits.

The Steinmetz Lab works across two sites at EMBL Heidelberg and Stanford University and is one of the world’s leading labs in technology development for functional genomics, by combining experimental work and bioinformatics. The successful applicant will also work in close collaboration with our industry partners at GSK/Cellzome, a centre of excellence for Omics technologies of GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), at the EMBL campus in Heidelberg.

What else you need to know

We are Europe’s flagship research laboratory for the life sciences – an intergovernmental organisation performing scientific research in disciplines including molecular biology, physics, chemistry and computer science. We are an international, innovative and interdisciplinary laboratory with more than 1700 employees from many nations, operating across six sites, in Heidelberg (HQ), Barcelona, Hinxton near Cambridge, Hamburg, Grenoble and Rome.

Our mission is to offer vital services in training scientists, students and visitors at all levels; to develop new instruments and methods in the life sciences and actively engage in technology transfer activities, and to integrate European life science research.
