About this position

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is a world leader in scientific research in and at the forefront in the development of cutting-edge technologies. In order to support its research teams, EMBL has set up a number of core facilities which provide cutting-edge services to its scientists and visitors from its member states. The Centre for BioImage Analysis (CBA) collaborates closely with the Advanced Light Microscopy and the Electron Microscopy Facilities together with EMBL’s IT department to develop and provide solutions in advanced image and data analysis. Core facilities and CBA closely collaborate with Cellzome, a GSK company located on the EMBL campus in Heidelberg. The computational biology group at GSK is developing state-of-the-art analysis and data integration methods for disease tissue characterization using single-cell and spatial omics data. We are seeking a Bioimage Analyst supporting the CBA team in developing and establishing workflows and services for the analysis of spatial multi-omics data.

Your role

The successful candidate will work in the Advanced Light Microscopy Facility (ALMF) and CBA at EMBL. In this role, you will support and develop cutting-edge and user-friendly workflows for the analysis of spatial multi-omics data. The focus will be on the analysis of image-based transcriptomics data generated using in situ sequencing (ISS) technology, which allows RNA molecule detection at subcellular spatial resolution. You will work on data import, image registration, artifact removal, spot detection, and transcript identification. You will also be involved in the establishment of an interactive visualization platform enabling quality control and scientific discovery in spatial multi-omics data. Data generation has already begun and will continue in the future, through imaging of tissue sections from non-small-cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) patients in collaboration with GSK Cellzome. The ultimate scientific aim is the detailed spatial characterization of the tumor microenvironment.

You have

As our ideal candidate, you will have a university degree in either life sciences, physics or engineering, preferably with a PhD. Experience in advanced light microscopy techniques, image analysis and image data handling is essential. Experience with one or more programming languages such as Python or Java is required. You should be a team player and have good communication and organisational skills. Fluency in English is compulsory.

You might also have

Experience in biological sample preparation and pursuing biological research questions, organization and teaching of training courses or software development might be an advantage.

Why join us

EMBL is an inclusive, equal opportunity employer offering attractive conditions and benefits appropriate to an international research organisation with a very collegial and family friendly working environment. The remuneration package comprises a competitive salary, a comprehensive pension scheme, medical, educational and other social benefits, as well as financial support for relocation and installation, including your family and the availability of an excellent child care facility on campus.

What else you need to know

We are Europe’s flagship research laboratory for the life sciences – an intergovernmental organisation performing scientific research in disciplines including molecular biology, physics, chemistry and computer science. We are an international, innovative and interdisciplinary laboratory with more than 1700 employees from many nations, operating across six sites, in Heidelberg (HQ), Barcelona, Hinxton near Cambridge, Hamburg, Grenoble and Rome.
