About this position

EMBL is committed to providing the next generation of scientists with the training, mentoring and career development support needed to identify and successfully progress in their desired careers.

The EMBL Fellows’ Career Service offers career support and guidance to predoctoral and postdoctoral fellows across EMBL’s six sites, helping fellows to take informed decisions about their career planning. The service is embedded within the EMBL International Centre for Advanced Training (EICAT). You will join the EICAT Internal Training Team and will report to EMBL's Head of Internal Scientific Training and Dean of Graduate Studies. You will work closely with the other dedicated Career Advisor and will interact with all colleagues in the Internal Training Team.


Your role

As our ideal candidate, you will be expected to work with a high degree of autonomy and to pro-actively handle all of your tasks. In particular, you will be involved in contributing to the career development programme across EMBL’s six sites through a portfolio of activities and resources. These include:

  • Individual career guidance
  • Job application materials checks
  • Resources summarizing information on different career options, and on best practice for job applications
  • Exercises to assist self-directed career planning
  • Career development workshops and events
  • Specific activities for predocs and postdocs

As Career Advisor you will be involved in delivering these existing activities and resources, and also be able to further develop these and propose new formats that will facilitate effective and efficient career support. You will also be involved in evaluating career and training outcomes and you will interface with all EMBL stakeholders engaged in training and career development. The position will be based in Heidelberg. Currently the career service activities are offered online, but the role will involve regular visits to EMBL's other sites when safe travel is possible.

You have

As the successful candidate you are expected to have a higher-level university degree in science, ideally including postdoctoral experience, and a proven track record in mentoring activities, preferably for scientists. Previous professional exposure to both the academic and the private sector is desired. You should have demonstrated effective organizational skills and prefer to work in a proactive manner, across a broad range of functions and with maximum flexibility in a dynamic environment. 

Excellent interpersonal skills are essential for this position, as is the ability to establish effective channels of communication with a large variety of stakeholders. The ability to pay attention to details and to ensure that confidential matters are dealt with efficiently and in a timely manner is essential. The position requires the highest degree of service orientation and a demonstrated ability to work in an international team.

Qualifications should include a first-rate command of written and spoken English.

You might also have

Additional qualifications in the area of scientific and/or vocational skills training is an advantage.

Practical experience in survey-design and data analysis would be advantageous. Experience in the management of projects and grants in the scientific context would be beneficial. Spoken and written knowledge of German is desirable, as is fluency in other languages, especially French, Italian or Spanish. As EMBL staff and visitors are of many different nationalities, candidates with previous experience or a desire to work in an international, scientific environment are encouraged to apply.
