About this position

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is a world leader in scientific research and at the forefront in the development of cutting-edge technologies. In particular, exciting single cell genomic methods co-developed by EMBL are revolutionising biological research. The field is advancing at a very rapid and exciting pace to measure multiple parameters from the same single cell (multi-omics) and to study cells in their native in-situ context (spatial-omics).


Eileen Furlong and Rainer Pepperkok are looking for a highly motivated computational scientist who loves to develop new computational solutions, and would like to expand their skills and knowledge regarding genomics and imaging data analysis and visualization within a highly collaborative, interdisciplinary, cutting-edge environment. The successful candidate will join a dynamic team dedicated to developing and refining novel methods in single cell genomics.


Your role

You will work together with a team of “wet lab” scientists, who are developing spatial single cell approaches and other single cell genomic methods to advance research throughout EMBL. You will play a key role in the team by developing a wide range of computational analysis pipelines, which span domains from experimental design (e.g. automatic probe generation) all the way to data analyses and visualization. The successful candidate should be able to work independently, while being an excellent team player and be highly motivated and very well-organized.

You have

EMBL is looking for a computer scientist who thrives in a highly collaborative, interdisciplinary, cutting-edge environment. Applicants should have a Ph.D. in biological science, bioinformatics, computer science or physics, and research experience in genomics and/or image data analyses in the biological life sciences. You should have a proven track record in developing computational solutions for genomics or imaging data analysis and/or visualization. Excellent communication skills and the ability to drive your own work while collaborating within a team are essential. Fluency in English is mandatory.

You might also have

Experience with working with R, Phyton, ImageJ, and MatLab is desirable. Expertise with single molecule imaging data analysis and visualization is a bonus.
