About this position

We are seeking a highly motivated research technician to join the Zimmermann research group at EMBL Heidelberg. The Zimmermann group combines high-throughput mass spectrometry, bacterial genetics, biochemical assays and DNA-sequencing technologies to investigate the interactions between the gut microbiome, medical drugs, and the human host. This interdisciplinary research collaboration between EMBL Heidelberg and the University Children’s Hospital Heidelberg studies the impact of individuals' microbiome composition on disease development and treatment outcome.

Your role

We are looking for a highly motivated person with experience in molecular biology, microbiology, analytical chemistry (metabolomics), and genomic sample preparation. Your role will be to work with researchers at the interface of experimental microbiology, analytical sciences, and medicine. You will work in a team to plan and perform high-throughput screens to investigate the mutual interactions between individual bacteria and microbial communities with medical drugs.

You have

  • Appropriate degree (Diploma, Bachelor’s or Master’s degree) or advanced degree (including PhDs - salary will be commensurate with experience)
  • Experience in molecular biology protocols (e.g. cloning protocols, DNA and RNA extraction, primer design, PCR)
  • Expertise in microbiology (culture bacteria, isolate strains, genetic manipulations)
  • Experience with biochemical protocols (protein purification and analysis, enzyme assays)
  • Generally good laboratory practice and stringent documentation compliance
  • High motivation, proactive personality, independence and solution-oriented approach
  • Strong organizational, communicational and interpersonal skills
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English

You might also have

  • Experience in analytical chemistry (Metabolomics, proteomics, lipidomics based on HPLC, LC-MS, GC-MS measurements)
  • Expertise in anaerobic microbiology experimentation
  • Experience in microbiome research (library preparation for 16S rRNA sequencing)
  • Experience with clinical study protocols (e.g. sample processing, biobanking)
  • Familiarity with data analysis software (e.g. Excel, Prism, R)

Why join us
