About this position

The Duss group at EMBL Heidelberg is looking for a motivated and committed Laboratory Officer in Charge who will help to set up a new lab and promote a fun and positive lab atmosphere. Our group uses single-molecule fluorescence microscopy in combination with integrative structural biological and biochemical approaches to understand how protein-RNA complexes are assembled, providing new opportunities to fight diseases and to create new functional molecular assemblies.

Your role

Scientific research:

  • Cloning, recombinant protein expression (in E. coli; experience in other hosts is a plus), protein purification and labeling
  • Purification of bacterial RNA polymerase
  • Purification and in vitro reconstitution of bacterial ribosome
  • Developing and performing in vitro assays for protein-RNA binding, transcription, ribosome assembly and translation
  • Cleaning and functionalizing glass slides for total internal reflection fluorescence microscopy (no previous experience required)
  • Contributing to the experimental projects is possible
  • Literature research
Lab management, training and supervision:
  • Training of other group members and visitors in technologies and protocols used in the laboratory
  • Testing and developing new tools, reagents and experimental protocols
  • General laboratory management, including instrument maintenance and scheduling, ordering, keeping in order the inventory, stocks and training manuals

You have

  • A PhD or at least 5  years of working experience in molecular biology or related disciplines
  • Experience in protein expression and purification
  • Experience in purification of large macromolecular complexes (e.g. ribosome or RNA polymerase)
  • Experience in developing in vitro assays for protein-RNA interactions and function
  • The ability to work independently and teach yourself new methods and develop new protocols
  • Excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills
  • High commitment and motivation
  • Good knowledge of desktop software applications
  • Excellent knowledge of English

You might also have

  • Experience in programming (Python, Matlab)
  • Experience in fluorescence microscopy
