About this position

The Arendt Group is seeking a candidate animal technician to run our marine facility. The facility holds several marine invertebrate species with particular emphasis on the model annelid Platynereis dumerilii. The successful candidate will be primary manager and caretaker for all marine animals investigated by the Arendt Group.

Initially this is a parental leave coverage for 8 months starting as of September 2020, with a subsequent possibility to apply for a longer fixed-term staff contract.

Your role

As our successful candidate you will manage, maintain and give primary care to a variety of aquatic life in the Arendt Group’s Marine Facility and perform diverse additional activities related to the marine animal facility. • Participate in new animal collections • Establish and maintain new animal cultures by initiating viable breeding programs • Devising new protocols and best practices for husbandry of all laboratory cultures • Assist with the design of life support systems for new marine animal facilities • Microinjections to assist certain laboratory projects • Water changing and cleaning all animal facilities • Maintenance of stock foods and algae food cultures • Preparing diets and feeding of all animals • Regular water analysis for all areas of the facility • Maintaining cleanliness in all facilities and work areas for animal-related activities • Helping laboratory members with setting up animal-related experiments • Collaborate in setting up microcosm experiments with laboratory members • Maintenance of facility stocks and record keeping • Provide routine animal observation and necessary feedback • Contribute to strategic goals of the laboratory and it’s animal inhabitants • Perform other duties as required

You have

• Knowledge of basic aquarium procedures and safe work practices when working in a wet environment • Knowledge of water quality parameters in both a fresh water and marine environment • Minimum 1 year working experience in a marine facility (public aquarium/research facility) and life support systems • Ability to work for long periods independently • Ability to lift objects of a minimum of 10kg’s • Strong observational skills to ensure animal health and safety • Sound judgement and ability to use common sense for effective decision making • Good time-management skills • Be able to endure exposure to cold temperatures on a regular basis, excessive smells, wet environments and bending/standing/ladder climbing • Basic computer skills • Fluency in English

You might also have

• Knowledge of animal care requirements, including animal facilities and husbandry regulations • Basic animal biology and disease knowledge will be an asset • Knowledge of German is advantageous.

What else you need to know

This position is 39 hours per week full time and requires require weekend and holiday work.
