About this position

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory - European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) is seeking a Project Manager for the European COVID-19 Data Platform. The main purpose of the role is to provide the project management to ensure successful delivery  of the Platform through the four EC Horizon 2020 projects that support it.

The European COVID-19 Data Platform provides a foundation of data and services to support research activities in the fight against COVID-19. Launched in April 2020, the Platform develops with high energy and advances rapidly in content, technologies, functions and usage. Delivery brings together teams from across EMBL-EBI and a host of collaborating partners from European and Global institutions with budget in excess of €6M over two years.

As Project Manager, you will have a central role in driving forward and coordinating project activities between the teams involved at EMBL-EBI and at our collaborator sites, the EC and our grants and financial management groups, and you will take part in project dissemination activities. This position is an exciting opportunity to become involved in, and provide critical support for, a major component of the world’s scientific response to COVID-19, to contribute to society in the face of the crisis and to help to deliver infectious disease data infrastructure for reuse in the future.

Your role

The main activities that you will be involved in are:

  • Ensuring that European COVID-19 Data Platform deadlines, milestones and objectives are successfully achieved by providing support, proactive management and guidance to task and work-package leaders and other partners;
  • Coordinating overall project reporting, ensuring that all funders’ requirements for this are met;
  • Assisting project planning and budgeting processes;
  • Assembling and analysing metrics and outcomes;
  • Leading the scheduling and preparation of Platform meetings; minuting these meetings; following up on actions; circulating meeting reports;
  • Effectively and proactively communicating operational outcomes, risks, and ongoing processes to the coordinating investigator;
  • Contributions to web content in the Platform’s COVID-19 Data Portal and internal project pages;
  • Day-to-day management of Platform risks and opportunities, including project performance indicators and the risk register;
  • Involvement in sustainability planning for the Platform’s components;
  • You will work in the Data Coordination and Archiving Team, led by Guy Cochrane. You will collaborate with the EMBL-EBI grants and financial management offices.

You have

  • A postgraduate degree in the life sciences, ideally in a subject area that is relevant to the Platform;
  • Experience in coordinating complex projects across a team or a number of partners;
  • Demonstrable experience that is relevant to writing both technical reports and text for the lay reader;
  • Experience in planning and minuting meetings;
  • Excellent written and verbal English language skills;
  • A high level of accuracy and attention to detail;
  • Good organisational skills, the ability to prioritise different tasks and to manage intermittent heavy workloads;
  • A proven ability effectively to interact with multiple stakeholders to deliver results;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Experience of working and delivering results in a high-paced, multidisciplinary professional/academic team environment;
  • The ability to handle confidential information and all situations with diplomacy and tact;
  • A high level of independent working, initiative, and flexibility.

You might also have

  • A good understanding of European research programmes, and demonstrated experience of managing EU-funded contracts and grants;
  • Previous experience in a service or support role;
  • Good working knowledge of the Google drive suite, Microsoft office packages, including Word and Excel;
  • Ability and eagerness to learn new software and tools where necessary;
