About this position

The Open Targets project aims to systematically identify and prioritise drug targets by combining genetic, clinical and functional genomics data. It is a shared initiative between the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI), a global leader in the management, integration and analysis of public domain life science data; world-leading pharmaceutical companies GSK, Takeda, Sanofi and Bristol Myers Squibb, and the Wellcome Sanger Institute, a world-leading genomics institution with expertise in human genetics, cancer and infectious disease.

The Open Targets Platform integrates public domain data to enable target identification and prioritisation. The Open Targets Genetics Portal identifies targets based on GWAS and functional genomics. We complement data integration with large scale systematic experimental approaches to support target identification, prioritisation and validation.

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Open Targets team, work in a diverse and dynamic environment, and help support the Open Targets consortium goals.

This is a three year contract with broad exposure to different areas within Open Targets (operations, project management, communications/design), with the opportunity for further training in each of these areas.

Your role

We are seeking an enthusiastic, motivated individual to provide project management and operational support for the Open Targets Core team. You will support the ongoing delivery of the Open Targets Platform and Genetics Portal, helping the team build and execute development roadmaps, manage releases and ensure the team’s deliverables are executed on time, and risks are managed effectively.

You will also be responsible for the Open Targets service desk for queries and requests regarding the platform, as well as carrying out some QC to support releases. This role will include liaising with and managing data providers and supporting the Strategy Lead on communicating with partners in the pharmaceutical industry. This is a role suitable for a range of experiences including those early in their career or changing career path, as further training will be available.

Project management support for releases:

    • Ensure that project deadlines, targets and objectives are successfully achieved by providing support, pro-active management and guidance to the Platform team and data providers
    • Liaise with team leads to ensure all projects and releases are delivered on time
    • Use existing templates to communicate with data providers about release timelines and data submission window
    • Provide support for manual QC processes
    • Prepare and distribute/upload technical notes, release notes, and the change log
Operational support
    • Liaise with the Platforms team to ensure Agile methodologies are respected; sprint planning, retrospectives, user stories, epics and milestones.
    • Work closely with the Product Design & Strategy Lead to assist with product design tasks and other workshops, including participatory design sessions and remote/in-person usability testing sessions
    • Effectively and proactively communicate operational outcomes, risks, and ongoing processes to the Platform Team Lead
    • Preserve the Open Source nature of the project at all stages of delivery
    • Monitor Google Cloud costs
    • Schedule meetings where required
    • Triage requests from the Support Desk
Communications
    • Liaise closely with the Outreach Officer on notifications and updates to the editorial calendar, such as those regarding platform releases
    • Update the Open Targets Intranet (e.g. uploading lab meeting slides, uploading roadmaps, etc.)
    • Update the Open Targets corporate website with items relevant to the Platforms Team (for example job advertisements)

You have

  • A degree-level or equivalent qualification
  • Good time management and organisational skills, and can work to deadlines
  • Used or are comfortable with using remote collaboration tools and digital project management software (e.g. Zoom, Slack, Github, ZenHub, or similar software)
  • Experience of managing a project, individually or as part of a team
  • The ability to engage and enthuse others, and are self-motivated

You might also have

  • Previous experience in an academic environment, but you are aiming to expand your managerial skills
  • Dedicated training and/or external qualifications in project management (ScrumMaster, Prince2, PMI-ACP, etc.)
  • Experience participating in a software development or Bioinformatics project
  • Experience in drug discovery and/or drug development pipelines

Why join us

Join our diverse team to contribute to an innovative, large-scale, multi-year, public-private partnership that uses human genetics and genomics data for systematic drug target identification and prioritisation, and ultimately to help the development of more efficacious and safer treatments for patients.

You will have the opportunity to work within a dynamic team and expand your training and experience in operations, project management, communications and design.
