About this position

We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic User Support Bioinformatician for deployment in the task force building and operating the SARS-CoV-2 Data Hubs, a part of the European COVID-19 Data Platform ( The postholder will work in the Data Coordination and Archiving Team at the EMBL European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI;, located on the Wellcome Genome Campus near Cambridge (UK).

Your role

This is an opportunity to make a significant contribution to EMBL-EBI’s COVID-19 scientific response. The European COVID-19 Data Platform comprises two components: the COVID-19 Portal supporting access and analyses of COVID-19 related reference data and specialist datasets and the SARS-CoV-2 Data Hubs, providing support for outbreak data management, sharing and cloud-based analysis.

As part of the SARS-CoV-2 Data Hubs Task Force, you will be involved in providing support for a growing number of groups and agencies adopting sequencing and analysis programmes for SARS-CoV-2. Tasks will include: configuration and operation of Data Hubs; assisting external users in depositing and validating data, such as through expert advice on our different web and programmatic submission interfaces or writing scripts and plug-ins to integrate submissions into existing laboratory workflows; sharing expertise on available analysis workflows and their use; and liaison with EMBL-EBI Software Engineers in the design and improvement of submission tools and services.

You have

Applicants should possess a university degree in the life sciences, a post-graduate degree in bioinformatics, data science or a biological science and the following experience:

  • Broad knowledge of molecular biology and next-generation sequencing technologies
  • Data coordination
  • Relational database management systems and SQL query language
  • UNIX command-line operations
  • Knowledge of XML format and schema
  • Programming in Perl, Python or another scripting language
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Planning and delivering projects

You might also have

  • Experience working in a multidisciplinary research collaboration
  • Experience in analysing, resolving and responding to helpdesk user queries
