About this position

We are seeking to recruit an enthusiastic, highly motivated technical programme manager to integrate IT and related life-science services into the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC). You will be based in the Technology Science Integrationteam at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) located at the Wellcome Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK

Your role

Working across the life-science related EOSC activities at EMBL-EBI you will establish a strategy and an implementation plan that will bring our cloud and data infrastructure services into EOSC. You will need to ideally have both cloud and life-science knowledge - being able to understand both the technical challenge of cloud service integration and the bioinformatics services needed to enable the diverse computing needs of life-scientists (e.g. through ELIXIR - www.elixir-europe.org).

You will need to integrate the work taking place across different projects located in different EMBL-EBI teams into a coherent programme of activities. Your persuading and influencing skills will be as important to your success as your technical expertise. The portfolio of activities include the ELIXIR Compute Platform (where we lead the container and data transfer activities), ELIXIR Implementation studies (where you will coordinate technical contributions from within the team), the EC funded EOSC-Life project (where we co-lead the cloud infrastructure activities) and the EOSC-Hub (where we lead on ELIXIR integration).

In addition, we are exploring how cloud infrastructures could provide distributed workflow analysis capacity using community specifications emerging from the international genomics community (www.ga4gh.org). As part of this work travel within Europe and possibly worldwide will be needed.

You have

  • Experience of using cloud infrastructures to support applied research. This may be as an infrastructure provider within EOSC or as an applied researcher making use of EOSC-like services.
  • Have at least four or more years of technical project management work. This could be in an environment leading an agile software development team with daily scrum meetings or where you have operated and maintained production services.
  • Be capable of using integrating technologies and frameworks (e.g. Java, Python) to make use of or develop distributed services to support data-intensive workloads (e.g. full-stack web applications development).
  • Be able to work with minimal direction when making technical decisions, but to do so within a team when needed by having excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.

You might also have

  • Knowledge of the European life-science research infrastructure activities (e.g. ELIXIR, EOSC-Life) or specifications and activities coming from the Global Alliance of Genomics and Health (GA4GH).
  • Knowledge of European e-Infrastructure activities such as EGI’s Federated Cloud or the European Open Science Cloud.
  • Worked in an academic or research setting.
  • Worked in a user-facing role where you have interacted directly with users of the software.
