Technical Specialist - Makerspace/Workshop

Scientific Services and Support
Barcelona, Spain

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organizations in the world. The newest EMBL site in Barcelona, with its focus on tissue biology and disease modelling, is established in the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB), one of the largest infrastructures in Southern Europe dedicated to translational research.

Biological and biomedical research has moved rapidly towards adopting 3D cultures, which requires design and fabrication of novel engineered platforms. To bridge engineering, biology and biomedicine, we are building a Makerspace Workshop to facilitate creative design and development of engineered tools. In collaboration with the Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG) and Pompeu Fabra Univirsity (UPF), this workshop will be housed in the PRBB and will allow access to all employees across institutes within the park. This space will be useful for fostering novel collaborations between institutes and will allow for creative exchange of ideas. The workshop will also be host to in-house demos and/or outreach activities related to fabrication.

Thus, we are looking for a Technical Specialist who can fulfil a dual role. One major role (50% time dedication) is to manage the workshop – assist with basic training of all users, scheduling, stocking and overall maintenance of the space. In addition, the (50% time dedication) Technical Specialist will work as a consultant on the establishment of new tools (help with design, fabrication and/or troubleshooting) for EMBL projects, as well as potentially run demos and outreach activities on the basis of need.

Your role

You will handle all managerial aspects of the workshop and implement strategies for upkeep, maintenance and communications with all workshop users. You will also assist in the development of novel platforms, and tools as required by groups at EMBL Barcelona, or those at EMBL’s Mesoscopic Imaging Facility (MIF). As a Technical Specialist, you will work independently but closely with groups in EMBL Barcelona and our collaborating institutes within the PRBB.
