Senior Scientists

The Senior Scientists are a select group, with important statutory responsibilities for advising the Director General on faculty appointments and promotions.

They also provide collective advice to the Director General and the Heads of Units (Units and Sites) on matters with significant impact on the scientific life of the Laboratory.

Finally, they are expected to contribute individually to the well-being of the Laboratory as a whole, by assuming special tasks on their own initiative or as requested. For example, representing the Laboratory in various partnerships, high-level meetings, courses etc.

The Heads of Units and the Senior Scientists meet six times a year, both in Heidelberg and in the Sites. An important adjunct of these meetings are scientific presentations by the hosting Unit, and meetings of cross-Unit interest groups or committees.

EMBL is an inter-governmental organisation with 29 member states, one associate member and one prospect member that is led by the Director General, Prof. Edith Heard, appointed by the EMBL Council.
