If you are a STEM teacher interested in a new educational tool that introduces students to PCR,\u00a0 join the online TeachingBASE workshop \u201cCopy that! &#8211; making sense of PCR (paper-based)\u201d on Wednesday, 6 April 2022, run by EMBL\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.embl.org\/ells\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">European Learning Laboratory for the Life Sciences<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.embl.org\/ells\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(ELLS)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. For more information, visit the workshops\u2019 respective web pages.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/ells\/learninglab\/copy-that-pcr-computer-based\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cCopy that! &#8211; making sense of PCR\u201d (computer-based)<\/a> on 12 May 2022, 18:00- 20:00 CET<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/ells\/learninglab\/fluorescent-recombinants-molecular-cloning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;Fluorescent recombinants &#8211; making sense of molecular cloning&#8221;<\/a> on<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">18 May 2022, 18:00-20:00 CET<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n        \n        <!-- Nested tabs-->\n        \n              <\/section>\n            <section class=\"vf-tabs__section\" id=\"vf-tabs__section--2\">\n        <h2>About the educational resource<\/h2>\n                  <p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCopy that! &#8211; making sense of PCR\u201d is a paper-based, hands-on teaching resource that guides students through the process of designing a PCR experiment to detect a viral gene. To achieve this goal, students first use a cut-out paper mask to find potential primers in a cDNA sequence. Then, students design the PCR programme and evaluate the outcome of the experiment by interpreting the results visualised on an agarose gel picture. The classroom activities will take 60-90 minutes to complete.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The resource is designed to teach PCR to students aged 16-20 years in the classroom or remotely. Students should be familiar with the basic concepts of DNA and RNA. It will also be beneficial if they already know some basics of cDNA and PCR.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To equip students with the information they need to complete the activities, the resource provides fact sheets, the ELLS <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taq<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Polymerase data sheet, a cut-out mask for the selection of primers and a fraction of the cDNA sequence of the SARS-CoV2 RNA dependent RNA Polymerase.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By using this resource, your students will\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">follow authentic procedures carried out in scientific laboratories\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">learn about the concept of PCR and its applications\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">design PCR primers and a PCR protocol<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">learn how to interpret PCR results<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/p>\n        \n        <!-- Nested tabs-->\n        \n              <\/section>\n            <section class=\"vf-tabs__section\" id=\"vf-tabs__section--3\">\n        <h2>About the workshop<\/h2>\n                  <p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This workshop is for educators who teach any level of upper secondary school biology and is particularly suitable for those teaching students aged 16 and older. The workshop will take place online via Zoom on Wednesday, 6 April 2022, from 18:00 &#8211; 20:00 CET.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We will start this workshop with a short introduction to the \u201cCopy that!-<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> making sense of PCR<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d educational resource.
