{"id":19021,"date":"2015-09-11T15:43:45","date_gmt":"2015-09-11T13:43:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/emblog.embl.de\/ells\/?p=19021"},"modified":"2021-06-23T08:10:24","modified_gmt":"2021-06-23T08:10:24","slug":"geneticists-for-a-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/ells\/2015\/09\/11\/geneticists-for-a-day\/","title":{"rendered":"Geneticists for a day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Labcoats, micropipettes, hot blocks and a thermocycler \u2013 these were just some of the things ten eager researchers between the age of 11 and 17 could call their own for a day.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-19022 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/emblog.embl.de\/ells\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/IMG_3129_web.jpg\" alt=\"Tschira Jugendakademie 2015\" width=\"227\" height=\"169\"><\/p>\n<p>The students were participants of a summer school run by the \u201cTschira Jugendakademie\u201d (a project of the \u201cKlaus Tschira Foundation\u201d) and were \u2013 for one of their projects \u2013 hosted by the European Learning Laboratory for the Life Sciences (ELLS) at EMBL.<\/p>\n<p>The event centred around the hereditary disease haemochromatosis \u2013 a condition which increases the level of iron stored in the body manifold and may lead to symptoms such as fatigue, diabetes, and liver or heart failure if untreated. The genetic basis of the disease is a tiny change in the DNA sequence of affected people \u2013 a point mutation on chromosome 6.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/emblog.embl.de\/ells\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/IMG_3150_web.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-19043 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/emblog.embl.de\/ells\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/IMG_3150_web-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"208\" height=\"156\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After an introduction to the topic, the young researchers started their own experiments at the Training Labs of the EMBL Advanced Training Centre.
