International PhD Programme research topics

When you apply for the EMBL International PhD Programme, you are asked to select two EMBL research units and to indicate up to four research areas that interest you.

A variety of backgrounds, such as biology, chemistry, computational science, mathematics and statistics, are relevant to PhD projects at EMBL-EBI.

As well as purely computational projects, there may also be possibilities to incorporate some experimental biology in collaborating laboratories.

The following Group Leaders are amongst those hoping to recruit during 2024. Other supervisors will be recruiting in the areas of network biology, multi-omic integration and systems medicine.

Isidro Cortés-Ciriano: Cancer Genomics

The group develops computational tools to characterise the mechanisms and consequences of genome instability processes in human cancers through the analysis of genome sequencing data from clinical samples and preclinical models using artificial intelligence and statistical methods. Our ultimate goals are to deliver computational tools in the field of cancer genomics to study cancer evolution and facilitate the discovery of novel biomarkers and therapeutic targets, and analytical methods applicable in clinical settings to improve cancer diagnosis and treatment selection. Our research activities are articulated around 3 main areas:

  • Genomic instability and immune escape
  • Early detection of cancer
  • Single-cell genomics
