Der Geist des EMBL in 5 Worten – ich würde sagen: Zusammenarbeit, modernste Technologien, Inklusion …

… natürlich Neugier, aber diesen Geist hat jede wissenschaftliche Unternehmung.

Ich denke, es ist wirklich innovativ und echter Teamgeist.

Diese Politik der offenen Tür, die Interdisziplinarität und die Tatsache, dass sehr herausfordernde Projekte einfach  beim Kaffee bei der Diskussion zwischen einem Ingenieur, einem Biologen und einem Bioinformatiker entstehen können.

Auch Ideen, die verrückt aussehen, kann man hier umsetzen.

Wir haben also Maschinenbauer und Elektrotechniker, die alle zusammenarbeiten, sowie all die Forschenden, die hinter uns stehen mit ihrem Feedback und ihren Meinungen und dem Austausch von Gedanken.

Und dann ist das wieder das Besondere am EMBL: Wir arbeiten am EMBL, aber dann kommen wir hierher und haben auch Kollegen in ganz Europa, richtig? Man hat also ein riesiges Netzwerk, wenn man will, und ich denke, das ist das Wunderbare und Spannende daran.

Ich denke, das ist es, was die Wissenschaft heute braucht. Wir brauchen mehr interdisziplinäre Forschung und wir müssen verschiedene Techniken und verschiedene Bereiche kombinieren, weil dies die leistungsfähigste Methode ist und wir dann die besten Ergebnisse erzielen können.

Was das EMBL besonders macht, sind all die erstaunlichen Dinge, mit denen wir arbeiten dürfen, wie all die neuen Technologien, die es dort gibt.

Es ist, als würdest du zum Beispiel bei der NASA oder SpaceX arbeiten, weißt du, das ist das Beste auf dem Gebiet und du arbeitest dort, das heißt, niemand anderes steht weiter oben, und du sprengst die Grenzen der Forschung.

Und deshalb glaube ich wirklich, dass ich großes Glück hatte, hier am EMBL zu arbeiten, weil wir die Unterstützung und die Infrastruktur hatten, die es ermöglichten, diese Art von Meta-Analyse durchzuführen.

Leider ist diese Forschungsförderung in meinem Heimatland Mexiko nicht so, wie wir sie in Europa sehen. Es gibt nicht genug Geld, es gibt nicht genug Unterstützung für Wissenschaftler, diese sehr wilden Gedanken anzupacken. Für Mexikaner ist es eine wirklich schöne Gelegenheit, zum EMBL zu kommen und in dieser sehr multikulturellen Einrichtung aufgenommen zu werden. Hier kann ich Dinge tun, die ich in Mexiko nicht tun könnte, und ich kann diese Dinge auch lernen und an irgendeinem Punkt nach Mexiko wieder zurückbringen.

Es ist sehr schön, die hochmodernen Einrichtungen hier zu sehen, und auf den Kursen und Konferenzen, die hier stattfinden, gibt es viele Gelegenheiten, unterschiedliche Menschen kennenzulernen.

Es gibt nichts Schöneres als erst einmal in einem Auditorium zu sitzen und einem Redner zuzuhören. Aber wissen Sie: Vieles, was auf Konferenzen passiert, findet nicht während der Vorträge statt. Es geht danach weiter, an der Bar, im Foyer, wo die Leute weiter über ihre Wissenschaft diskutieren. Und es sind diese spontanen Diskussionen, die die Forschung wirklich ausmachen. Sie sind es, die die Dinge voranbringen und woraus Kooperationen entstehen.

Am EMBL kannst du im Grunde jeden Tag jemandem begegnen, von dessen Forschung du selbst profitieren kannst und der von deiner Forschung profitieren kann.

Jeder von uns hat seine eigenen Fähigkeiten, und es ist wirklich sehr interessant zu sehen, wie einer eine Idee hat und dann alle von uns diese Idee zu etwas Neuem entwickeln können.

Du bist nie die klügste Person im Raum. Du willst immer mit Leuten zusammenarbeiten, die intelligenter sind als du selbst, denn ich glaube, dass nur das den wirklichen Anstoß gibt, nur daraus wirkliche wissenschaftlichen Entdeckungen entstehen.

Ich habe meinen Chef immer mit dem genauen Titel und Nachnamen angesprochen. Nach ein paar Mal sagte er mir, dass die Kultur am EMBL ziemlich informell sei und ich ihn ruhig mit Vornamen ansprechen könne. Für mich war es immer schwierig, jemanden, der einen höheren Rang hat als ich, nur mit seinem Vornamen anzusprechen. Es hat einige Zeit gedauert, aber jetzt fühle ich mich ziemlich wohl dabei.

Ich denke, was sehr einzigartig am EMBL ist, und was ich vorher noch nie gesehen habe, sind die freitäglichen „Bier-Sessions“ und die Tatsache, dass die verschiedenen Labore diese Bier-Sessions selbst organisieren und es manchmal auch Pizza gibt: Pizza ist auch dabei.

Ja, diese Art von Kommunikation und Vernetzung ist in das tägliche Leben integriert. Sie ist kein einmaliges Ereignis im Jahr.

Die Menschen sind sehr, oder sogar mehr als freundlich. Sie sind sehr integrativ. Es ist wie eine kleine Mini-Welt mit Menschen von überall auf der Welt. Und es ist eine wirklich schöne wissenschaftliche Gemeinschaft zum Arbeiten.

The spirit of EMBL in 5 words, I would say collaboration, state-of-art technologies, inclusion…

…curiosity, of course, but that’s the spirit of every scientific endeavour.

I think it’s really innovative and it’s really collaborative.

This open-door policy, the interdisciplinarity, and the fact that very challenging projects just can come out of a discussion over a coffee between an engineer, a biologist and bioinformatician.

So we have mechanical engineers and electronics engineers all working together, as well as all of the scientists that are behind us with feedback and opinions and sharing ideas.

And then especially, again, with EMBL, like, so we work in EMBL, but then we’re coming here and we also have colleagues all over across Europe, right? So you have like a huge network if you want to and I think this is like amazing and exciting about it.

I think this is what today science need. We need more interdisciplinary research and we need to combine different techniques and different fields because this is the most powerful method and then we can get the best results.

What makes EMBL special is all the amazing stuff that we get to work with. Like all of the new technology that’s out there.

It’s like you’re working for example in NASA, SpaceX, you know, that’s the top in the field and the you are working there, that means nobody else is above you and you are breaking the boundaries of research.

And that’s why I actually think I was very lucky to work here at EMBL because we had the support and we had the infrastructure that allowed to do this kind of metanalysis.

Unfortunately in my in my home country, Mexico, this support for research is is not the same as we see this in Europe. There is not enough funding, there is not enough support for scientists to grab these very wild ideas. For Mexicans it’s a really nice opportunity to come to EMBL and to be accepted in this very multicultural institution. To do things that I wouldn’t be able to do in Mexico and also to learn these things and to take them back to Mexico at some point.

It’s very nice to see the cutting-edge facilities here and also the courses and conferences that happen here creates a lot of opportunities for meeting diverse people.

There is nothing like sitting, first of all, in an auditorium, hearing a speaker. But, you know, much of what happens at conferences is not during the transmission of the lectures. But what goes on afterwards at the bar, in the foyer, where people continue discussing their science. And it’s those spontaneous discussions that are that really are the fiber of research and and of moving things ahead and establishing collaborations.

At EMBL basically every day you could run into someone of whose research you could profit from and who could profit from your research.

Each one of us has really their own set of skills and it’s really, really interesting to see how, like, one has one idea and then all of us can develop that idea into something new.

You’re never the smartest person in the room. You always want to work with people who are smarter than you, because I think this is where the real, the real push, the real scientific discoveries come from.

I always used to address my supervisor with a proper title and the surname. After a few interactions, he told me, I mean, like the culture at EMBL is pretty informal and feel free to address me by my first name. In my mind it was always difficult to address someone pretty senior to me by just by their first name. It took some time, but then now I’m pretty comfortable.

I think to me what’s very uniquely to EMBL, which I never saw before, is the Friday beer sessions and how different labs have their own turn to organize the beer session and sometimes has pizza, pizza is involved as well.

Yeah, this communication and networking is integrated in day-to-day life. It’s not a once in a year event.

The people are very, more than friendly. They are very inclusive. And it’s like a small mini world, like people from everywhere on Earth. And it’s a really nice science community to work.
