For more than twenty years the Open Access movement has been trying to remove access barriers to scientific results. However, today this goal has still not been fully achieved. Initiatives for Open Access publishing like Plan S<\/a> – supported by cOAlition S, an international consortium of research funders \u2013 or transformative agreements like the German Projekt DEAL<\/a> try to turn Open Access into the standard for scientific publishing. She studied the development of Drosophila<\/em> as a postdoc at the Medical Research Council\u2019s Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB) in Cambridge, UK. She spent 1989-1994 as a group leader at the Max Planck Institute in T\u00fcbingen, Germany and became Professor at the Institute of Genetics, University of Cologne, in 1994. She spent extended research periods and sabbatical visits at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF), USA, the \u00c9cole normale sup\u00e9rieure in Paris, France, and the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute at Hinxton, UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In January 2010, Maria Leptin was appointed Director of EMBO. Her research group at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) studies the cell biology and biophysics of cell shape changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Maria Leptin is an elected member of EMBO, the Academia Europaea, the German National Academy, Leopoldina, and an Honorary Fellow of the UK Academy of Medical Sciences. She is Deputy Director of the Christiane-N\u00fcsslein-Volhard Stiftung, member of the selection panel for the Eppendorf Award for Young European Investigators, has chaired evaluation panel for ERC Advanced Investigator Grants, and Synergy Grants, serves on the editorial boards ofleading journals, and on advisory boards of several academic institutions and selection panels for funding institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Dr. Guido F. Herrmann, Managing Director of Germany and Vice President at John Wiley & Sons, Inc.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Dr. Guido F. Herrmann has been Managing Director of Germany and Vice President at John Wiley & Sons, Inc. since April 2017. Dr. Herrmann is responsible for business operations in Germany and leads a substantial portion of Wiley\u2019s global journal portfolio, with primary responsibility for titles in the physical and medical sciences. He joined Wiley from Georg Thieme Verlag, where he has worked for 20 years as Managing Director. Dr. Herrmann serves as Chair of the STM Copyright Enforcement Task Force and sits on the Supervisory Board of VG Wort, the German reproduction rights organization. He is a past member of the Supervisory Board of FIZ Karlsruhe, where he also chaired the Scientific Advisory Board for many years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n Dr. Ralf Schimmer, Deputy Director and Head of Information at Max Planck Digital Library<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Ralf Schimmer leads the licensing strategy of the Max Planck Digital Library, serving the 80+ advanced research institutes of the Max Planck Society. A champion of open access in scholarly communications, he chaired the Governing Council of SCOAP3 (2014-2016), serves on many international boards (e.g. Knowledge Unlatched and Fair Open Access Alliance), and is a leader for the Open Access 2020 Initiative.
