{"id":23173,"date":"2025-03-21T10:49:25","date_gmt":"2025-03-21T10:49:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/about\/info\/szilard-library\/?p=23173"},"modified":"2025-03-23T12:21:13","modified_gmt":"2025-03-23T12:21:13","slug":"international-weeks-against-racism-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/about\/info\/szilard-library\/blog\/2025\/03\/international-weeks-against-racism-2\/","title":{"rendered":"International Weeks Against Racism"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>International Weeks Against Racism are marked in Heidelberg this year from 17.3. to 8.4. with extensive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iz-heidelberg.de\/aktuelles\/news\/11_03_2025+iwgr+2025\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.iz-heidelberg.de\/aktuelles\/news\/11_03_2025+iwgr+2025\">program organized by Interkulturelles Zentrum<\/a> Heidelberg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To support engagement against racism, Szil\u00e1rd Library brings variety of books on this topic. <strong>Books are on display at the Library Corner in Cafeteria, together with promotional material from Interkulturelles Zentrum Heidelberg<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The foundations of this initiative lay in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/observances\/end-racism-day\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/observances\/end-racism-day\">The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination<\/a> that is observed annually on 21.3., marking the day the police in Sharpeville, South Africa, opened fire and killed 69 people at a peaceful demonstration against apartheid &#8220;pass laws&#8221; in 1960. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This UN initiative has a significant perspective for scientific community, as even today, scientific racism continues to exist. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Scientific racism is a historical pattern of ideologies that generate pseudo-scientific racist beliefs\u2026.Leading scientists across scientific institutions in the 19th&nbsp;and early 20th&nbsp;centuries were proponents of such ideologies\u201d, describes Vence L.
