{"id":21275,"date":"2024-09-10T21:39:00","date_gmt":"2024-09-10T21:39:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/about\/info\/szilard-library\/?p=21275"},"modified":"2025-01-04T16:45:05","modified_gmt":"2025-01-04T16:45:05","slug":"embl-theses-collection","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/about\/info\/szilard-library\/blog\/2024\/09\/embl-theses-collection\/","title":{"rendered":"EMBL 50th anniversary in the library: EMBL theses collection"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Among Szil\u00e1rd library special collections, EMBL PhD theses collection stands out \u2013 it represents the past, the present and the future of scientific research at EMBL and its influence worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As soon as the first collaborations for doctoral research were carried out during the 1970s  at EMBL labs, and later since the EMBL International PhD Programme was established, the theses were collected at Szil\u00e1rd Library. Over time the Szil\u00e1rd Library became the repository of EMBL PhD theses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this collection there are more than one thousand thesis that are bound in recognizable \u201cEMBL thesis\u201d blue hard cover, thank to <a href=\"https:\/\/ortlieb-buchbinderei.de\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/ortlieb-buchbinderei.de\/\">Mr Kai Ortlieb and his bookbinder craft-shop<\/a> from Eppelheim-Heidelberg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"vf-figure wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"683\" height=\"1024\" class=\"vf-figure__image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/about\/info\/szilard-library\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Library_2016_0287-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-21277\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/about\/info\/szilard-library\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Library_2016_0287-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/www.embl.org\/about\/info\/szilard-library\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Library_2016_0287-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.embl.org\/about\/info\/szilard-library\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Library_2016_0287-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.embl.org\/about\/info\/szilard-library\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Library_2016_0287-1024x1536.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.embl.org\/about\/info\/szilard-library\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Library_2016_0287-1365x2048.jpg 1365w, https:\/\/www.embl.org\/about\/info\/szilard-library\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Library_2016_0287-scaled.jpg 1707w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px\" \/><figcaption class=\"vf-figure__caption\">EMBL theses collection in the former reading room 2016. Photo credit: Marietta Schupp.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Many theses are available online as full text via<a href=\"https:\/\/libcatalog.embl.de\/cgi-bin\/koha\/opac-search.pl?limit=mc-itype%2Cphr%3A10&amp;limit=itype%3A10&amp;sort_by=acqdate_dsc\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/libcatalog.embl.de\/cgi-bin\/koha\/opac-search.pl?limit=mc-itype%2Cphr%3A10&amp;limit=itype%3A10&amp;sort_by=acqdate_dsc\"> Library online catalogue<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first thesis that acknowledges the research done at EMBL was defended by Barbara Ziganke, with title &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/libcatalog.embl.de\/cgi-bin\/koha\/opac-detail.pl?biblionumber=9585\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/libcatalog.embl.de\/cgi-bin\/koha\/opac-detail.pl?biblionumber=9585\">Zur Quart\u00e4rstruktur von Mitochondrialem Cytochrom B<\/a>&#8220;, and presented on 7th July 1976 at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universit\u00e4t in M\u00fcnchen. Other important partner universities are University of Cambridge, UGA Grenoble, University of Hamburg, UPF Barcelona, Sapienza University Rome, University of Dundee, KU Leuven, and from all around Europe: Iceland, Croatia, Greece, Portugal\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Theses collection is also a mirror of EMBL research groups over the decades, keeping among others, theses defended as part of Directors\u2019 Research groups (<a href=\"https:\/\/libcatalog.embl.de\/cgi-bin\/koha\/opac-search.pl?idx=kw&amp;q=kafatos&amp;sort_by=title_az&amp;count=20&amp;limit=au:Kafatos%20Group\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/libcatalog.embl.de\/cgi-bin\/koha\/opac-search.pl?idx=kw&amp;q=kafatos&amp;sort_by=title_az&amp;count=20&amp;limit=au:Kafatos%20Group\">Kafatos Group<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/libcatalog.embl.de\/cgi-bin\/koha\/opac-search.pl?idx=au&amp;q=mattaj&amp;sort_by=title_az&amp;count=20&amp;limit=au:Mattaj%20Group\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/libcatalog.embl.de\/cgi-bin\/koha\/opac-search.pl?idx=au&amp;q=mattaj&amp;sort_by=title_az&amp;count=20&amp;limit=au:Mattaj%20Group\">Mattaj Group<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/libcatalog.embl.de\/cgi-bin\/koha\/opac-detail.pl?biblionumber=44137\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/libcatalog.embl.de\/cgi-bin\/koha\/opac-detail.pl?biblionumber=44137\">Heard Group<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thesis last catalogued in the Szil\u00e1rd Library catalogue &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/libcatalog.embl.de\/cgi-bin\/koha\/opac-detail.pl?biblionumber=44214\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/libcatalog.embl.de\/cgi-bin\/koha\/opac-detail.pl?biblionumber=44214\">Somitogenesis unbound<\/a>&#8221; is defended in 2024 and belongs to Maria Costanzo from EMBL Barcelona Ebisuya Group. Not only a scientific excellence, EMBL theses are witnesses of our time, as Maria emphasized in her Acknowledgement section:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEven here, in this scientific bubble in Barcelona, where the war is not devastating and killing people, the show of its absurdity is on full display. In a historical moment in which even pledging for peace is becoming divisive, louder and stronger: to peace.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Worthy of mention is the project in the coming years to create a special place at EMBL Heidelberg for the exhibition of this special collection of theses.
