EMBL has joined the two successfully negotiated DEAL agreements with Wiley and Springer Nature. Projekt DEAL is an initiative of the\u00a0Alliance of German Science Organizations\u00a0to negotiate nationwide transformative \u201cpublish and read\u201d agreements with the largest commercial publishers of scholarly journals on behalf of all German academic institutions, including universities, universities of applied sciences, research institutions, state and regional libraries. Although DEAL is a national project in Germany, EMBL is eligible to participate with all its sites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is the DEAL agreement?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The DEAL agreements are Read &amp; Publish licensing agreements concluded between the Alliance of German Science Organizations and Wiley and Springer Nature. It offers participating institutions access to the publisher\u2019s full eJournal portfolio (1600 titles in a range of disciplines) while supporting and facilitating Open Access publishing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Wiley agreement and the Springer Nature agreements are valid for the period 2024 \u2013 2028. The DEAL agreements are transformative agreements compliant with Plan S principles.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What does it mean for you?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;The agreement offers to EMBL\u2019s affiliating authors at all sites a number of benefits:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Wiley<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Perpetual access to the entire portfolio of electronic journals published by Wiley, including full backfiles from 1997 forward.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reduction in the Open Access expenditure for EMBL groups. For the period 2024 \u2013 2028,\u00a0<strong>APCs for papers published in hybrid OA journals can be covered by the EMBL Szil\u00e1rd Library<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>20% reduction in APCs for papers submitted in fully\/gold OA journals.&nbsp;The remaining costs are covered by the central APC budget or, if applicable, by a grant.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Automatic submission of your paper to EuropePMC, thus ensuring full compliance with the IP66\/Open Access publication policy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The complete and continuously updated journal title list covered by the DEAL-Wiley agreement can be found on <a href=\"https:\/\/deal-konsortium.de\/en\/agreements\/wiley\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/deal-konsortium.de\/en\/agreements\/wiley\">Wiley &#8211; DEAL Consortia page<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Springer Nature<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Permanent access to all issues and volumes of the approximately 1,900 Springer Nature journals (including Springer Medical, Palgrave, Adis, and Macmillan Academic imprints) published during the contract period.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nature-branded journals and magazines (e.g. Scientific American, Spektrum der Wissenschaft) and technical journals (e.g. ATZ, MTZ) are not included.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reduction in the Open Access expenditure for EMBL groups. The affiliation should be selected during the submission process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Acceptance date<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>When publishing in&nbsp;<strong>Online Open (hybrid journals)&nbsp;<\/strong>the manuscript must be accepted on or after&nbsp;<strong>1 July 2019 (Wiley)&nbsp;<\/strong>or on or after<strong>&nbsp;1 January 2020 (Springer Nature)<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When publishing in&nbsp;<strong>Gold Open Access&nbsp;<\/strong>the manuscript must be accepted on or after&nbsp;<strong>22 January 2019 (Wiley)&nbsp;<\/strong>or on or after<strong>&nbsp;1 August 2020 (Springer Nature)<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Procedure<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Detailed description for selecting either Open Access routes can be found on Wiley\u2019s pages\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/authorservices.wiley.com\/author-resources\/Journal-Authors\/open-access\/how-to-order-onlineopen.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Online Open<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/authorservices.wiley.com\/asset\/photos\/licensing-and-open-access-photos\/Publishing_article_in_fully_open_access_journal.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gold Open Access<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For\u00a0<strong>Online Open,\u00a0<\/strong>be sure to select the option:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/authorservices.wiley.com\/author-resources\/Journal-Authors\/open-access\/how-to-order-onlineopen.html#InstitutionFunderPayment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">My APC will be covered by an institution or funder that has a Wiley Open Access Account arrangement with Wiley<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For any questions regarding the eligibility criteria or procedure, please\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:library@embl.de\">contact the library<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Definitions<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Hybrid journal<\/strong>: A subscription-based journal that additionally offers a Gold Open Access publishing option. Popular hybrid journals published by Wiley include&nbsp;<strong>The EMBO journal (EMBO Press), FEBS letters, Angewandte Chemie, Cancer medicine, CHEMBIOCHEM, Proteomics, Journal of applied crystallography (IUCr), Journal of synchrotron radiation (IUCr).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Fully\/ Gold Open Access<\/strong>: A journal whose content is made available as Gold Open Access and only induces publication but not subscription costs. Popular Fully\/ Gold OA journals include&nbsp;<strong>Molecular Systems<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>Biology<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>EMBO Molecular Biology<\/strong>&nbsp;(<strong>EMBO Press<\/strong>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Submitting corresponding author:&nbsp;<\/strong>The author who represents the authoring team of a manuscript during the submission process, in communication with the publisher and for content-related questions by readers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Online Open<\/strong>: The Open Access option and workflow made available by Wiley when publishing at a hybrid journal.
