{"id":73,"date":"2020-11-12T11:13:40","date_gmt":"2020-11-12T11:13:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/about\/info\/scientific-visitor-programme\/?page_id=73"},"modified":"2023-07-05T09:05:26","modified_gmt":"2023-07-05T09:05:26","slug":"practical-information","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/about\/info\/scientific-visitor-programme\/practical-information\/","title":{"rendered":"Practical information"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"vf-grid | vf-grid__col-3\"><div class=\"vf-grid__col--span-2\"><!--[vf\/content]-->\n<div class=\"vf-content\">\n\n<p class=\"vf-lede\">EMBL typically welcomes a significant number of scientific visitors to all its sites from trainees to principal investigators (PIs) on a sabbatical (please see our Annual reports for numbers).<\/p>\n<!--\/vf-lede-->\n\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Travel<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Visitors are in general expected to make their own travel arrangements to the hosting EMBL site.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If they&nbsp; receive travel funding from EMBL, reimbursement is provided at the following agreed rates based on the home country of the visitor:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Individual travel costs should not exceed the following limits:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Germany (250 \u20ac)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Europe (450 \u20ac)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>East Coast USA &amp; Canada, China, Israel (1,250 \u20ac)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>West Coast USA &amp; Canada (1,500 \u20ac)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rest of the world (2,000 \u20ac)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The costs of the researcher\u2019s travel to EMBL will be covered by EMBL at a rate not exceeding that of the most economic, reasonable and rational means of transport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Accommodation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>EMBL has access to a variety of accommodation at many of its sites. Relevant advice through experience of past visitors can be provided by the respective site administrative contact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Childcare and Schooling&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bi-lingual and International Schools<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There are several bi-lingual and international schools located in and around the Heidelberg and Mannheim area. The following links are some examples. Any news we receive about information events are also posted on this webpage. If you find any information which could be added to this webpage, please contact the SA office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<details  class=\"vf-details\" id=\"\"  >\n<summary class=\"vf-details--summary\">\nHeidelberg International School<\/summary>\n<div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<p>All classes are taught in English and German is taught as a subject in all grades and at all levels of ability. Visits to the school can be arranged on an individual basis. Note that the school calendar year is not the same as German schools. The school year begins at the end of August and ends at the end of June. The offices are open during the summer. They recommend that visits are made when the students are there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All EMBL staff have a 50% discount on the tuition fees and are able to pay the fees on a monthly basis. The entrance fee is also reduced by 50% (due before the first day of school). Once a visit is confirmed, the HR team or the Unit Administrator will contact the visitor to assist with the visa application procedure.&nbsp; All visitors from Third countries are advised to schedule a visit well in advance to allow sufficient time for visa-related procedures.
