Zeroing in on heart disease
<\/a>Innovative strategy pinpoints genes underlying cardiovascular disease risk.
Studies screening the genome of hundreds of thousands of individuals have linked more than 100 regions in the genome to the risk of developing cardiovascular disease. Researchers from EMBL and the University of Heidelberg are taking these results one step further by pinpointing the exact genes that could have a role in the onset of the disease. Their findings are published today in the Public Library of Science (PLoS) Genetics.

Two additional MMPU Group leaders receive ERC Advanced Grants<\/a>: Rohini Kuner, PI of the MMPU group \u201cChronic Pain\u201d and Matthias Hentze, PI of the MMPU groups \u201cBlood Diseases \u201c and \u201cIron Homeostasis\u201d. ERC Advanced Grants allow exceptional established research leaders to pursue ground-breaking, high-risk projects that open new directions in their respective research fields or other domains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three further groups joined the MMPU: Anne-Claude Gavin (EMBL Heidelberg) and Anthony Ho (Department of Internal Medicine V: Hematology, Oncology and Rheumatology, Heidelberg University Medical Center) study early warning signals of aging, John Briggs (EMBL, Heidelberg) and Hans-Georg Kr\u00e4usslich (Department of Infectious Diseases, Virology, Heidelberg University Medical Center) look how to interfere with the assembly and maturation of infectious HIV-1, and Paul Heppenstall (EMBL Monterotondo) and Rohini Kuner (Institute of Pharmacology, Heidelberg University Medical Center) search for molecular mediators of chronic pain. The MMPU now consists of eight international teams with more than 70 scientists from across the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two MMPU groups moved into common space provided by the University of Heidelberg, the Otto-Meyerhof-Zentrum (OMZ)<\/a>, Im Neuenheimer Feld 350. The OMZ was built in 2001 and serves as additional building for medical research groups from the Heidelberg University Medical Center with a strong focus on interdisciplinarity. Otto Meyerhof, a German physician and biochemist, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1922 for his work on muscle metabolism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Peer Bork received an ERC Advanced Grant for his proposal \u2018Cancerbiome\u2019 which pioneers research into microbial communities associated with cancer. The European Research Council (ERC) is the EU funding body that implements the specific FP7 Programme \u2018Ideas\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Blood-clotting protein linked to cancer and septicaemia
<\/a>Scientists of the group ” Diseases of mRNA metabolism” have discovered how stressed cells boost the production of the key blood-clotting factor, thrombin. Their work, published in Molecular Cell, shows how cancer cells may be taking advantage of this process, and opens new possibilities for fighting back against cancer and septicaemia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
