From Windrush to the Royal Veterinary College and giving back: A winding journey of success

Abstract

Black History Month provides an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the important contribution that Black People have made to the development and prosperity in the UK. The theme for BHM 2021 is ‘Proud to be….’ and in this talk Donald will discuss his journey as a descendent of the Windrush generation in particularly the factors that impacted and influence his pathway of becoming a scientist. Reflecting on his experience, Donald will also discuss the power of reaching back and how this can make a difference.

Biography

Donald is an Associate Professor of Immunology at the Royal Veterinary College, University of London and Honorary Senior Lecturer in Immunology at Imperial College London, Visiting Lecturer at Cambridge University and University of East London. Donald obtained his PhD at MRC Clinical Research Centre, Northwick Park Hospital, Imperial College London. Prior to joining the RVC, Donald worked at Cancer Research UK and Imperial College London; in the latter he obtained an MRC Careers Development Award. His main research interest is focused on understanding the effect of age on the immune system and has published over 50 research manuscript and written chapters in several books. Donald teaches on several undergraduate and postgraduate courses also supervises undergraduate and postgraduate projects. He is on the Editorial Board of various scientific journals and is currently Education & Careers Secretary of the British Society for Immunology.  Donald is also Co-Founder/Co-Director of Reach Society, am award winning social enterprise aim at inspiring young people to fulfil their potential. He is Chair of Governors at a school in North West London.
