The aim of these roles is normally ensuring the smooth running of specific training programmes, funding schemes,  services or networks that are aimed at researchers, or supporting the organization\u2019s leadership with strategic projects and analysis.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"vf-tabs\"><ul class=\"vf-tabs__list\" data-vf-js-tabs=\"true\"><li class=\"vf-tabs__item\"><a class=\"vf-tabs__link\" href=\"#vf-tabs__section-ad9d22e7-f2ff-4f69-8d17-6906474a25b3\" data-vf-js-location-nearest-activation-target=\"\">Roles and responsibilities<\/a><\/li><li class=\"vf-tabs__item\"><a class=\"vf-tabs__link\" href=\"#vf-tabs__section-0e516856-67d5-40f7-8a48-9fb56f3d4d9c\" data-vf-js-location-nearest-activation-target=\"\">Career entry and progression<\/a><\/li><li class=\"vf-tabs__item\"><a class=\"vf-tabs__link\" href=\"#vf-tabs__section-2b831503-f499-4f03-ae98-402b00c99e2e\" data-vf-js-location-nearest-activation-target=\"\">Knowledge and skills<\/a><\/li><\/ul><div class=\"vf-tabs-content\" data-vf-js-tabs-content=\"true\">\n<section class=\"vf-tabs__section\" id=\"vf-tabs__section-ad9d22e7-f2ff-4f69-8d17-6906474a25b3\"><h2>Roles and responsibilities<\/h2>\n<p>The job titles and the tasks associated with science administration positions vary greatly. Possible tasks may include a subset of the following activities:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Organising events and\/or training programmes for scientists.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Organizing evaluation of applications, including identifying relevant experts and follow-up activities (e.g. quality check of review reports, organising evaluation panels).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reporting on programme activities and key statistics; raising the programme\u2019s visibility by giving talks, attending events and\/or organising advertising materials.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Identifying trends and advising institute management on institutional\/programme direction.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Administrative support for activities e.g. monitoring payments and reporting, organizing travel and logistics for events, coordinating committee meetings, and minute-taking.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Working with stakeholders (e.g. faculty and early career researchers) to assess and refine programmes.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Collecting and structuring information about opportunities for researchers (e.g. potential funding, career options, industry collaborations).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Supporting scientists applying to grants by advising on applicable funding schemes, providing feedback or guiding the administrative parts of the application (budget, description of hosting institute etc).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"vf-tabs__section\" id=\"vf-tabs__section-0e516856-67d5-40f7-8a48-9fb56f3d4d9c\"><h2>Career entry and progression<\/h2>\n<p>It is possible to enter the career area in a junior role directly from a PhD or postdoc, without additional experience or training. Hiring managers will be looking for examples of analogous work you have done as a scientist \u2013 depending on the role, this may include organizational tasks (e.g. organizing scientific events), communication skills with a variety of audiences&nbsp; (e.g. working groups, scientific seminars) or experience writing successful fellowship applications. Career progression may involve moving to a more senior role within the same organisation (though opportunities may be limited in smaller organisations) or moving to a different role (at the same or more senior level) at another organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Example job titles<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Programme officer\/manager<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Research manager<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Community manager<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Scientific coordinator\/administrator<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Grants\/research funding officer\/manager<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>(Scientific) project officer\/manager<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>(PhD\/postdoc programme) officer\/coordinator\/manager<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Researcher developer<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Scientific strategy officer<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Science\/training officer<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Career advisor<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>(Mainly in US) Assistant\/Associate Dean<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Note: there is large variety between organizations; some roles may require experience in a more junior role first.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"vf-tabs__section\" id=\"vf-tabs__section-2b831503-f499-4f03-ae98-402b00c99e2e\"><h2>Knowledge and skills<\/h2>\n<p>In our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/about\/info\/embl-fellows-career-service\/blog\/2022\/03\/skills-for-a-scientific-career\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">careers and skills survey<\/a>, 38 science administration professionals told us about the competencies they used most often. The most commonly selected competencies were:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Organization (selected by 74% of respondents, and rated highest for success in the role)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Effective communication (selected by 68%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Teamwork (selected by 53%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Writing (selected by 45%)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Language requirements<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>In many cases, the working language for these roles is English.
