You can work in science policy roles for government bodies,  research institutes, universities, funding agencies, national academies,  non-profit organisations, think tanks, scientific societies and the private sector. This is a multidisciplinary field at the interplay of science, politics, and advocacy. Broad scientific knowledge and the ability to communicate clearly writing and orally with a variety of stakeholders are pivotal. This is a career with a broad societal impact and an interesting option for those aiming to translate scientific findings to bridge the gap between policy-makers and the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"vf-tabs\"><ul class=\"vf-tabs__list\" data-vf-js-tabs=\"true\"><li class=\"vf-tabs__item\"><a class=\"vf-tabs__link\" href=\"#vf-tabs__section-ad9d22e7-f2ff-4f69-8d17-6906474a25b3\" data-vf-js-location-nearest-activation-target=\"\">Roles and responsibilities<\/a><\/li><li class=\"vf-tabs__item\"><a class=\"vf-tabs__link\" href=\"#vf-tabs__section-0e516856-67d5-40f7-8a48-9fb56f3d4d9c\" data-vf-js-location-nearest-activation-target=\"\">Career entry and progression<\/a><\/li><li class=\"vf-tabs__item\"><a class=\"vf-tabs__link\" href=\"#vf-tabs__section-2b831503-f499-4f03-ae98-402b00c99e2e\" data-vf-js-location-nearest-activation-target=\"\">Knowledge and skills<\/a><\/li><\/ul><div class=\"vf-tabs-content\" data-vf-js-tabs-content=\"true\">\n<section class=\"vf-tabs__section\" id=\"vf-tabs__section-ad9d22e7-f2ff-4f69-8d17-6906474a25b3\"><h2>Roles and responsibilities<\/h2>\n<p>The tasks associated with science policy positions may include a subset of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>identifying, analysing and summarising the current policy landscape.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>gathering and synthesising key scientific information.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>identifying experts that can provide evidence-based advice to design new and\/or update policies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>organising and facilitating events including talks, meetings and workshops bringing together scientists, policymakers and relevant stakeholders.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>coordinating and delivering a variety of written outputs including science policy reports, position papers, blog posts, review papers, book chapters and\/or opinion pieces.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>advocating for policy changes that best serve the interest of organisations\/national governments.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>fostering national and international collaborations among governments and relevant stakeholders.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"vf-tabs__section\" id=\"vf-tabs__section-0e516856-67d5-40f7-8a48-9fb56f3d4d9c\"><h2>Career entry and progression<\/h2>\n<p>In Europe, a range of science policy opportunities are available at different agencies at the European Commission in Brussels (note: these require EU citizenship). Roles also exist in non-governmental organisations, scientific societies, and at the national level in the civil service, science advocacy organizations and research funders.&nbsp;A limited number of trainee, internship and fellowship programmes are available, including traineeships for civil service roles (e.g. <a href=\"https:\/\/traineeships.ec.europa.eu\/index_en\">EU Blue Book Traineeship<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parliament.uk\/get-involved\/research-impact-at-the-uk-parliament\/academic-fellowships\/\">national programmes<\/a>). These opportunities allow you to break into the field. A role in science administration is also a common stepping-stone for transitioning in the science policy field. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the USA and Canada, a variety of well-established and structured science policy fellowship programmes exist for early-career researchers to break into the field. Commonly, these programmes often require citizenship to apply, but some of them are also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalacademies.org\/our-work\/the-christine-mirzayan-science--technology-policy-graduate-fellowship-program\">open to non-nationals<\/a>. The AAAS report<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aaas.org\/resources\/connecting-scientists-policy-around-world\"> \u201cConnecting Scientists to Policy Around the World\u201d<\/a> provides an overview of science-policy engagement programmes worldwide.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Example job titles:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Science (policy) advisor<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Public policy specialist<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Policy analyst<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Science policy analyst<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Scientific officer<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Scientific program analyst&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"vf-tabs__section\" id=\"vf-tabs__section-2b831503-f499-4f03-ae98-402b00c99e2e\"><h2>Knowledge and skills<\/h2>\n<p>Science policy professionals told us the competencies they use most in their daily work. The most frequently selected competencies were:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>providing broader impact&nbsp; (selected by 71% of respondents; and ranked top for success in the role)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>effective communication&nbsp; (selected by 71%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>clarity of thought (selected by 67%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>resilient problem solving (selected by 67%)&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>networking (selected by 67%) &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>organization (selected by 67%)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Language requirements<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Some EU roles require fluency in two to three official languages of the EU. For roles at the national level, you will normally need full fluency in the national language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div
