{"id":13525,"date":"2024-09-26T14:29:36","date_gmt":"2024-09-26T14:29:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/about\/info\/embl-fellows-career-service\/?page_id=13525"},"modified":"2026-03-14T12:33:08","modified_gmt":"2026-03-14T12:33:08","slug":"pi","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/about\/info\/embl-fellows-career-service\/info-resources\/exploration\/pi\/","title":{"rendered":"Career area: Academic principal investigator (PI)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"vf-grid | vf-grid__col-3\"><div class=\"vf-grid__col--span-2\"><!--[vf\/content]-->\n<div class=\"vf-content\">\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A &#8216;research, development, scientific services&#8217; career<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Leading a research group as a principal investigator at a university or research institute is a common long-term career aim for PhDs and postdocs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"vf-tabs\"><ul class=\"vf-tabs__list\" data-vf-js-tabs=\"true\"><li class=\"vf-tabs__item\"><a class=\"vf-tabs__link\" href=\"#vf-tabs__section-ad9d22e7-f2ff-4f69-8d17-6906474a25b3\" data-vf-js-location-nearest-activation-target=\"\">Roles and responsibilities<\/a><\/li><li class=\"vf-tabs__item\"><a class=\"vf-tabs__link\" href=\"#vf-tabs__section-0e516856-67d5-40f7-8a48-9fb56f3d4d9c\" data-vf-js-location-nearest-activation-target=\"\">Career entry and progression<\/a><\/li><li class=\"vf-tabs__item\"><a class=\"vf-tabs__link\" href=\"#vf-tabs__section-2b831503-f499-4f03-ae98-402b00c99e2e\" data-vf-js-location-nearest-activation-target=\"\">Knowledge and skills<\/a><\/li><\/ul><div class=\"vf-tabs-content\" data-vf-js-tabs-content=\"true\">\n<section class=\"vf-tabs__section\" id=\"vf-tabs__section-ad9d22e7-f2ff-4f69-8d17-6906474a25b3\"><h2>Roles and responsibilities<\/h2>\n<p>The exact responsibilities and conditions for a PI role vary depending on the country and type of institution \u2013 for example, how much teaching is involved, and whether the position is tenure-track, permanent or for a defined period.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The responsibilities of the role are likely familiar to early career researchers. We nevertheless include some of the important aspects below as a reminder:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>&nbsp;establish and run a research group:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>set the research vision and scientific direction of the group. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>attract funding by writing grant applications. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>recruit and lead a research team; supervise and mentor masters, PhD students and other team members. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>establish an organizational framework for the lab and manage the budget.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>oversee the group\u2019s research \u2013 including providing guidance on projects and scientific good practices.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>some PIs also continue to carry out research work themselves.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>establish and manage scientific collaborations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>oversee the dissemination of the labs\u2019 research outputs (findings, protocols, materials) through publications, talks, data\/code deposits and other activities.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>if applicable, liaise with the institution\u2019s tech transfer office regarding innovations with commercial potential.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>contribute to institutional teaching and academic administration duties (e.g. committees).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>provide scientific service to the community (e.g. peer reviewing manuscripts and grant applications, participation in working groups, conference organisation, PhD examinations).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>further develop and share expertise in your research field, by remaining up to date with\/contributing to the literature, and attending\/presenting at conferences.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"vf-tabs__section\" id=\"vf-tabs__section-0e516856-67d5-40f7-8a48-9fb56f3d4d9c\"><h2>Career entry and progression<\/h2>\n<p>Many junior principal investigators are recruited via open, competitive calls. However, sometimes departments are willing to consider hiring candidates outside the regular calls, particularly if their research fits well and the candidate can bring in start-up funding that will help establish the group (e.g. in Germany, Emmy Noether; UK, various Career Development Awards). Faculty members report that they are open to being contacted by potential candidates when there is no open call to discuss potential opportunities (see our survey <a href=\"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/about\/info\/embl-fellows-career-service\/blog\/2022\/02\/preparing-for-an-academic-interview-a-career-panel-discussion-part-i\/\">here<\/a>).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There have been several attempts to shed some transparency on what factors are considered in faculty hiring decisions \u2013 including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.7554\/eLife.54097\">Insights from a survey-based analysis of the academic job market<\/a> \u2013 elife 2020<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biorxiv.org\/content\/10.1101\/829200v1.full\">The Academic Career Readiness Assessment: Clarifying training expectations for future life sciences faculty<\/a> \u2013 bioRxiv 2019<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/advances.sciencemag.org\/content\/7\/35\/eabj2604\">Myths and facts about getting an academic faculty position in neuroscience<\/a> \u2013 Science Advances 2021<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>as well as other interesting quantitative analyses, including<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.cub.2014.04.039\">Publication metrics and success on the academic job market<\/a> \u2013Current Biology 2014<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-018-07034-y\">Intellectual synthesis in mentorship determines success in academic careers<\/a>:&nbsp;Nature Communications<em> <\/em>2018<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>and discussions including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>eLife Webinars: <a href=\"https:\/\/elifesciences.org\/elife-news\/webinar-report-how-get-independent-position\">getting an independent position<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/elifesciences.org\/inside-elife\/31672928\/webinar-report-academic-interviews-and-how-to-get-hired\">how to get hired<\/a>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We highly recommend the resources above. During your postdoc, these can help guide your priorities. If you are still a PhD student or plan a second postdoc position, it is also important to consider carefully what you will need to get from your (next) postdoc to achieve your career aim, and choose a postdoc role carefully with this in mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We also note that, while in most cases it is possible to enter a PI role directly from a postdoc, in some countries a researcher position can be a typical or optional intermediate step between postdoc and official group leader role. It is therefore helpful to understand potential career paths and specific requirements for becoming a PI in the countries you are applying to. We include some resources for choosing a postdoc and understanding career structures in different countries in the \u2018want to learn more\u2019 section, below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Career progression: We estimate that more than 90% of EMBL alumni who obtain a group leader role remain in research principal investigator roles or gain more senior leadership positions (e.g. departmental head) [based on our <a href=\"https:\/\/elifesciences.org\/articles\/78706\">career tracking study<\/a>]. Some remain at the institution they were a junior principal investigator at for their entire career, but others move their lab during their career. A small number (~5%) transition to industry roles or very occasionally move into a service\/infrastructure role (1%) or leave research (&lt;1%).<\/p>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"vf-tabs__section\" id=\"vf-tabs__section-2b831503-f499-4f03-ae98-402b00c99e2e\"><h2>Knowledge and skills<\/h2>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/oc.embl.de\/index.php\/s\/uK0zyCna4wfpa95\">EMBL Fellows\u2019 Competency Framework<\/a> describes competencies that can support an academic research career.&nbsp; This was developed based on interviews with EMBL group leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"vf-figure wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"674\" class=\"vf-figure__image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/about\/info\/embl-fellows-career-service\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19485\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/about\/info\/embl-fellows-career-service\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-1.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.embl.org\/about\/info\/embl-fellows-career-service\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-1-300x197.png 300w, https:\/\/www.embl.org\/about\/info\/embl-fellows-career-service\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-1-768x506.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"vf-figure__caption\">List of competencies in the EMBL Fellows\u2019 Competency Framework, grouped into 6 areas. For a full description of each competency, please see the<a href=\"https:\/\/oc.embl.de\/index.php\/s\/GOL09iQcSwRKuVV\"> <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/oc.embl.de\/index.php\/s\/uK0zyCna4wfpa95\">linked document.<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Language and teaching requirements<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>A common question from postdocs interested in roles in Europe is whether teaching experience will be required and whether knowledge of the local language is necessary. We asked about this in a careers and skills survey carried out in autumn 2020 (summary\/full results <a href=\"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/about\/info\/embl-fellows-career-service\/blog\/2022\/03\/skills-for-a-scientific-career\/\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Regarding teaching:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>ror research institutes not associated with a university, most respondents (12\/19) indicated that teaching experience is not a consideration in hiring decisions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>for respondents based at university departments or university-associated institutes, the majority of respondents (7\/12) indicated that \u2013 whilst some teaching experience would be advantageous \u2013 excellent candidates will be considered without this.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>for university departments, at least some experience is usually expected or advantageous \u2013 but for most this did not have to be&nbsp;extensive (only 2\/45 indicated that extensive teaching experience was required).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We also note that the type of institution seems to correlate with language requirements \u2013 with group leaders in university departments often needing at least some knowledge of the local language.
