The crucial role of temperature for biological systems is evidenced also by the evolution of adaptation responses, e.g. the heat shock response and temperature compensation in circadian clocks. Temperature changes diffusion constants, accelerates or slows reaction rates, alters macromolecular stability, influences proteostasis and metabolism, changes mechanical properties of the cytoskeleton and membranes, and shifts the pace of developmental and physiological processes. The sensitivities of these internal processes determine how biological function depends on temperature, yet they are typically examined in isolation across molecular, cellular, and organismal research fields.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This symposium will bring together researchers from diverse areas to map the landscape of temperature\u2019s effects on biological systems and to connect theoretical and experimental perspectives across scales. The goal is to build the foundations for a unified mechanistic understanding of how temperature acts through biochemical networks and physical processes such as diffusion, polymerization and mechanical stability. With new tools for high-resolution imaging, high-throughput measurements and advances in data-driven modelling, this is a uniquely timely moment for researchers working at molecular, cellular and organismal levels to exchange ideas and identify the common principles that shape biological responses to temperature variation. On this mechanistic basis, the symposium will also address the fundamental question, how biological systems have evolved in the face of past temperature changes and fluctuations, and how evolutionary Recipients will be notified of their travel cap amount when they are informed of the outcome of their application. Receipts must be provided via email with your signature for all costs incurred within two months of completion of travel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Childcare grant<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is the possibility to apply for a childcare grant to offset child care costs incurred by participants, speakers and organisers when attending a conference. Eligible costs include (but are not limited to) fees for a baby-sitter or child-care facility and travel costs for a caregiver. Please note that priority will be given to early stage researchers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You may apply for a childcare grant at the same time when submitting your abstract. There is a limited amount of funding available for the childcare grants and funds will be distributed amongst eligible applicants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Application<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>On-site participants<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You may apply for financial assistance when submitting your abstract. An adaptor and a plug that fits the German socket may be needed for your appliances\/laptop (i.e. American, Japanese, etc.). It is a 8km or a 20 minute taxi ride away from EMBL. In a medical emergency, the ambulance service generally transports patients to this hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Please remember to bring your own medication, if needed, to the conference. Note that the next pharmacy is a 4-minute drive from the EMBL, but for many medications you will be required to see a doctor to get a prescription.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ensure in advance that your medical insurance will cover you during your visit in the event that you do need to see a doctor while in Heidelberg. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The EMBL course and conference office team are able to advise you on where to turn for emergency or non-emergency medical treatment in Heidelberg and can assist you in making appointments and \/ or arranging transport to get to the pharmacy or a doctor of your choice if necessary.
