As access to high-end sorters increases, researchers are often expected to operate these instruments with minimal institutional support or formal training \u2013 particularly in settings lacking dedicated core facilities. Yet, understanding&nbsp; the principles behind cell sorting is crucial for designing effective experiments, troubleshooting issues, and generating high-quality, publishable data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This practical course addresses that need by offering a comprehensive programme that blends theoretical foundations with hands-on experience. Delivered by leading experts, it provides in-depth instruction on established best practices while also introducing participants to the latest advancements in the field, including spectral and image-enabled cell sorting. Now a well-established programme, the course is continuously refined to reflect technological advancements and the evolving needs of the research community. Each edition incorporates participant feedback and introduces emerging topics \u2013 such as spectral and image-enabled sorting, data reproducibility, and downstream applications. For example, image-enabled cell sorting, to which our team has directly contributed (Schraivogel et al. 2022), is now a key part of the programme. This dynamic and responsive approach ensures that the course remains current, relevant, and impactful for researchers working with advanced cytometry technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Audience<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This course is ideal for researchers at any stage who want to build confidence and expertise in cell sorting. Participants with a solid foundation in flow cytometry and hands-on experience using flow cytometers in their daily work will gain the most from the advanced, practice-oriented content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Learning outcomes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>By the end of the course, participants will have a strong understanding of the fundamental principles that underpin high-quality cell sorting, including experimental design, panel setup, controls, validation, and quality assessment. Through practical sessions on the BD FACSAria Fusion and BD FACSDiscover S8, they will learn how to translate these principles into practice, interpret sorting outcomes, and troubleshoot common challenges. Scanned copies cannot be accepted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Childcare grants<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There is the possibility to apply for a childcare grant to offset child care costs incurred by participants, speakers, trainers and organisers when attending a course. Eligible costs include (but are not limited to) fees for a babysitter or child-care facility and travel costs for a caregiver. Please note that priority will be given to early-stage researchers. There is a limited amount of funding available for the childcare grants and funds will be distributed amongst eligible applicants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds travel grant<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This grant covers costs related to your attendance to the course (registration, travel and accommodation costs). The grant is restricted to PhD students and postdocs who conduct basic biomedical research.<br>Whether you are eligible to apply for a travel grant,&nbsp;depends on when you received your university entrance qualification (e.g. Abitur, A-Levels, High School Diploma, Final State Examination):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; for PhD and MD students, as well as graduates, the university entrance qualification must not have been obtained more than 11 years ago at the time of the envisaged course<br>&#8211; for postdocs, the university entrance qualification must not have been obtained more than 13 years ago at the time of the envisaged course<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">EMBO accessibility grant<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For EMBO Practical Course participants with accessibility needs, there is the possibility to apply for an accessibility grant to offset costs incurred by participants or speakers when participating at a course. Eligible costs include costs incurred for equipment or adaptations to the course environment, or travel costs for an event companion to assist the participant or speaker during the course where necessary. While we do our best to accommodate needs, please note that extensive changes to the course environment might not be possible. Priority will be given to early-stage researchers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A maximum amount of \u20ac500 can be awarded per participant applying for an EMBO accessibility grant. An adaptor and a plug that fits the German socket may be needed for your appliances\/laptop (i.e. American, Japanese, etc.). It is a 8km or a 20 minute taxi ride away from EMBL. In a medical emergency, the ambulance service generally transports patients to this hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please remember to bring your own medication, if needed, to the course. Note that the next pharmacy is a 4-minute drive from the EMBL, but for many medications you will be required to see a doctor to get a prescription.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ensure in advance that your medical insurance will cover you during your visit in the event that you do need to see a doctor while in Heidelberg. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The EMBL course and conference office team are able to advise you on where to turn for emergency or non-emergency medical treatment in Heidelberg and can assist you in making appointments and \/ or arranging transport to get to the pharmacy or a doctor of your choice if necessary.
