Guest researchers, together with microscopy experts from EMBL, will foster an intensive exchange of information through a balance of lectures and practical workshops. The focus of the course will be on the use of fluorescence microscopy to obtain information about the localisation and functions of proteins and other biomolecules at different spatial scales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Audience<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This course is directed towards researchers in the life sciences with access to light microscopy equipment, who have an immediate need to apply the techniques they will learn to solve biological problems at the cellular and molecular level in vivo. As the course will primarily focus on advanced techniques, we expect participants to have basic knowledge of light microscopy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Modules\/resources<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The course will include lectures and hands-on practicals covering multiple fluorescence microscopy techniques:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Fast time-lapse microscopy of living cells<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Spinning disk and point-scanning confocal microscopy of large (3D) samples<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Two-photon microscopy and Second Harmonic Generation (SHG) imaging<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Photo-manipulation as a tool<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Multicolour single-molecule localisation microscopy (SMLM) with spectral demixing and DNA-PAINT<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Expansion microscopy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>FRET-based techniques<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Microscope automation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For demanding applications, we will cover the aspects of image processing and analysis. Aspects of image analysis will also be part of the microscope automation practical.<br>Because of time limitations, our course can not include comprehensive image analysis training covering all basic and different advanced image analysis topics. Before the course, we will provide self-training material covering the image analysis knowledge required to follow the course. If you are specifically interested in gaining in-depth knowledge of image analysis, we suggest paying attention to upcoming image analysis courses.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Can participants bring their image samples to the course?<br>The course schedule is very tight. Therefore, we unfortunately cannot offer sessions where course participants can experiment with their own samples. The samples for each practical will be provided by the course organisers. For participants who do not have access to the necessary techniques at their home institutions, we will include a discussion session on how to access light microscopy facilities or other research infrastructures at EMBL or other institutions to perform high-end experiments.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Which microscopes will be used for hands-on practicals?<br>Evident, together with its partner companies, An adaptor and a plug that fits the German socket may be needed for your appliances\/laptop (i.e. American, Japanese, etc.). It is a 8km or a 20 minute taxi ride away from EMBL. In a medical emergency, the ambulance service generally transports patients to this hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please remember to bring your own medication, if needed, to the conference.
