For example, in structural biology, insights into the functional mechanisms can be obtained by elucidating the 3D molecular structure of proteins and protein complexes using technologies such as X-ray crystallography, cryo-EM and NMR. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In order for these experiments to produce reliable and biologically relevant results, they must be performed using high-quality proteins that are active, properly folded, in the right oligomeric state and contain correctly inserted co-factors. Ensuring that these parameters are fulfilled requires quality control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this course, we want to help the participants to become acquainted with the concept of protein quality control and provide them with an overview of the specific protein requirements for various downstream applications. Some of these methodologies can be utilised both to assess protein quality and as standalone biophysical characterisation techniques.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our main goals are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Teach the participants how to perform proper protein quality control checks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Introduce the participants to various biophysical techniques used for protein characterization, such as SEC-MALS, DLS, SLS, mass photometry, DSF, flow induced dispersion analysis and spectroscopy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Show participants how to characterize protein interactions using ITC and flow induced dispersion analysis<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When possible, allow participants to apply these technologies to characterise their own protein samples in the practicals<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Overall, increase the success rate, reliability and reproducibility of downstream experiments in which purified proteins are used<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pre-requisites \/ technical requirements for joining the course<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Participants are highly encouraged to bring their own sample(s) for protein quality control and biophysical characterization experiments during the practical sessions. On hearing the alarm leave the building immediately following the escape route and fire wardens and head to one of the meeting points<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do not use the lifts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Beyond first aid<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Heidelberg University Hospital or \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.klinikum.uni-heidelberg.de\/\">Universit\u00e4tsklinikum<\/a>\u2018 has a 24 hour accident and emergency facility and is at &#8216;Im Neuenheimer Feld 672&#8217;. It is a 8km or a 20 minute taxi ride away from EMBL. In a medical emergency, the ambulance service generally transports patients to this hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please remember to bring your own medication, if needed, to the conference. Note that the next pharmacy is a 4-minute drive from the EMBL, but for many medications you will be required to see a doctor to get a prescription.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ensure in advance that your medical insurance will cover you during your visit in the event that you do need to see a doctor while in Heidelberg. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The EMBL course and conference office team are able to advise you on where to turn for emergency or non-emergency medical treatment in Heidelberg and can assist you in making appointments and \/ or arranging transport to get to the pharmacy or a doctor of your choice if necessary.
