As this was my first EMBL conference, I was excited to join a vibrant international community of scientists working to understand one of the cell&#8217;s most dynamic and essential cytoskeletal systems. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over four days, the symposium brought together experts in structural biology, cell biology, biophysics, neuroscience, and computational biology to discuss how microtubules contribute to cellular organization, development, and disease. Advances in cryo-electron microscopy, structural biology, and computational modelling have significantly improved our understanding of microtubule organization at both molecular and cellular scales. A major theme throughout the day was that microtubule structure directly determines function. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speakers demonstrated how tubulin isotypes, post-translational modifications, and subtle differences in lattice architecture influence intracellular signaling, microtubule dynamics, and tissue-specific cellular behaviour. These findings highlighted that even small structural variations can have profound biological consequences. Another important topic was microtubule remodeling. Presentations showed that lattice defects are not simply signs of damage but actively participate in microtubule repair and reorganization. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other talks focused on how interactions between molecular motors and microtubule-associated proteins generate self-organized cytoskeletal networks. Studies using minimal spindle reconstitution illustrated how relatively simple molecular components can collectively produce the highly organized structures required for chromosome segregation during mitosis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first day also included speed networking, poster previews, and a welcome reception, providing valuable opportunities to interact with researchers from diverse institutions and career stages. As my first EMBL symposium, I found the collaborative atmosphere particularly welcoming, with discussions continuing naturally beyond the formal presentations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Day <\/strong>2: <strong>Microtubule organization across biological systems<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The second day opened with an inspiring keynote lecture by Nobel Laureate Martin Chalfie, who reflected on his scientific journey and emphasized the importance of curiosity, persistence, and following unexpected observations. His message was especially meaningful for early-career researchers, reinforcing that significant discoveries often arise from simple questions and careful observation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The scientific sessions explored how conserved microtubule mechanisms generate diverse cellular structures across different organisms. Presentations covered topics including plant meiosis, spermatid differentiation, cell polarity, cytokinesis, and spindle assembly. Despite the diversity of biological systems, a common principle emerged: fundamental microtubule-based mechanisms are adapted to perform specialized cellular functions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Several speakers highlighted how advances in quantitative imaging, structural biology, and computational modelling continue to reveal the molecular basis of chromosome segregation, spindle organization, and symmetry breaking. Other presentations focused on the adaptability of the microtubule cytoskeleton, demonstrating how specialized microtubule-associated proteins repair damaged lattices, how centrosomes organize microtubule networks during cell migration, and how tubulin composition influences the mechanical properties of microtubules. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Importantly, many talks connected these basic mechanisms to human health, illustrating the role of microtubules in skeletal muscle development, mitochondrial dynamics, and cellular responses to physiological stress. The afternoon flash talks and poster session encouraged further scientific exchange, particularly among graduate students and postdoctoral researchers, expanding discussions initiated during the scientific presentations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Day 3: Microtubules in the nervous system<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The third day focused on neuronal microtubules and their essential roles in nervous system development, maintenance, and disease. Presentations demonstrated how disruptions in microtubule organization contribute to neurodegenerative diseases, impaired axonal transport, spinal cord injury, and brain ageing. These studies illustrated how fundamental discoveries in microtubule biology are increasingly guiding therapeutic strategies aimed at restoring neuronal function. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A recurring theme was the structural plasticity of neuronal microtubules. Advances in cryo-electron microscopy revealed that neuronal microtubules possess unique lattice conformations that influence their stability and interactions with proteins such as tau. Other studies examined kinesin-driven lattice remodeling and the mechanical properties of axonal microtubules, emphasizing that the physical state of the microtubule lattice itself is an important regulatory feature controlling intracellular transport and neuronal organization. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The afternoon keynote lecture by Michael Shelanski provided a historical perspective on the discovery of tubulin and the evolution of cytoskeleton research. Rather than focusing solely on scientific milestones, the lecture highlighted the curiosity and persistence of the researchers who established the foundations of modern microtubule biology. This historical overview, together with the subsequent roundtable discussion, illustrated how decades of technological innovation and collaboration have shaped the field. The day concluded with another poster session and social events, including the conference barbecue, which provided additional opportunities for networking and exchanging ideas with researchers from around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Day 4: <strong>The tubulin code and future directions<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The final day focused on the &#8220;tubulin code&#8221; and the mechanisms through which post-translational modifications regulate microtubule function. Presentations demonstrated how modifications such as tyrosination, glutamylation, and glycylation influence ciliary function, intracellular signaling, molecular motor activity, and intracellular transport. These studies highlighted how subtle biochemical changes can substantially alter microtubule behaviour and cellular organization. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The concluding scientific session returned to one of the symposium&#8217;s central themes\u2014cell division. Speakers examined how coordinated interactions between kinetochores, motor proteins, and post-translational modifications ensure accurate chromosome segregation. Several presentations also explored how defects in these mechanisms contribute to cancer and discussed emerging therapeutic approaches targeting mitotic regulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The symposium concluded with poster awards and closing remarks, bringing together the major scientific themes explored throughout the meeting. Overall, the conference demonstrated that microtubules are highly dynamic structures whose functions extend far beyond providing structural support. They actively integrate mechanical, biochemical, and signaling information to regulate virtually every aspect of cellular organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Attending my first EMBL symposium was an exceptionally valuable experience. The meeting combined outstanding scientific presentations with an open and collaborative environment that encouraged discussion across disciplines and career stages.
