Peer embodied the organisation\u2019s curiosity and inclusive culture across all our missions, and I know he would have been proud to see the progress made by EMBL.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Peer was a wonderful man and an outstanding scientist. Always working at the frontier of science, he saw possibilities far before others \u2013 pushing new technologies, reconsidering analytical approaches to expand what questions we could now answer, and repeatedly, pushing our ignorance further back to reveal often surprising insights about the living world around us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We had intended to write this foreword together, and I know he would be just as exuberant about the distance EMBL travelled in the past 12 months as I am. In the current programme, seven overlapping themes facilitate collaborative, impactful work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div><!--[vf\/content]-->\n<div class=\"vf-content\">\n\n<p class=\"vf-text--body vf-text-body--2\" style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:300\"><em>\u201c<em>As long as you have a feature that can be discriminated visually from a \u2018regular\u2019 cell, you can \u2013 thanks to AI \u2013 train the system to detect it.
