Composition by Creative Team\/EMBL<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Following in the footsteps of the Paris Climate Agreement, world leaders met at the<a href=\"https:\/\/ukcop26.org\/\"> UN Climate Change Conference 2021<\/a> \u2013 known as COP26 \u2013 to put forward their nations\u2019 plans to tackle the climate crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And for the first time, EMBL was there.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"vf-figure  | vf-figure--align vf-figure--align-inline-end  size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"427\" class=\"vf-figure__image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/about\/info\/annual-report\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/WhitePaper_20211018_design_cover_Page_01-border.webp\" alt=\"White paper on molecular biology and green recovery\" class=\"wp-image-2456\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/about\/info\/annual-report\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/WhitePaper_20211018_design_cover_Page_01-border.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.embl.org\/about\/info\/annual-report\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/WhitePaper_20211018_design_cover_Page_01-border-211x300.webp 211w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption class=\"vf-figure__caption\">Leading European molecular biologists came together in 2021 to identify current and potential solutions to challenges in four research areas: global warming, loss of biodiversity, biogeochemical flows, and manufactured pollutants. The findings are set out in the white paper &#8216;<em>Harnessing molecular biology to accelerate the Green Recovery<\/em>&#8216;, released to inform and stimulate debate at the UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26).&nbsp;<br><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/lab-matters\/life-sciences-have-key-role-in-developing-climate-change-solutions\/\">EMBL attended this important conference as an official Observer,<\/a> to raise awareness amongst other participants of the potential role life sciences, and molecular biology in particular, can play in tackling environmental issues. Prior to COP26, EMBL \u2013 along with other major US and European science laboratories \u2013<a href=\"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/lab-matters\/science-for-sustainability\/\"> affirmed its shared commitment to uniting science towards a sustainable, resilient global society and economy.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In preparation for this event, EMBL also created a white paper titled \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/topics\/cop26\/\">Harnessing molecular biology to accelerate the Green Recovery<\/a>\u2019. It spotlights promising molecular biology-based solutions to climate challenges. The paper followed a workshop EMBL hosted to explore this topic with other European molecular biologists. The White Paper was covered by media outlets across member states including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/sciences\/article\/2021\/11\/10\/la-biologie-moleculaire-une-arme-sous-estimee-dans-la-lutte-pour-le-climat_6101588_1650684.html\">Le Monde<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-021-03029-w?utm_source=twt_nat&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=nature\">Nature<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agenciasinc.es\/Reportajes\/El-arsenal-de-la-biologia-molecular-para-combatir-la-crisis-climatica\">Agencia SINC<\/a>, and others, and featured on social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>EMBL\u2019s participation in European and global initiatives to address climate change challenges continues to increase. Since 2021, EMBL has also had a<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/clima\/eu-action\/european-green-deal\/european-climate-pact_en\"> European Climate Pact<\/a> Ambassador. The Ambassadors will engage people and organisations not yet involved in climate action and act as a bridge between the European Commission and their respective host organisations on these issues.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"\"><!--[vf\/content]-->\n<div class=\"vf-content\">\n\n<div style=\"height:237px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"vf-u-text-color--green vf-text--body vf-text-body--2\"><em>\u201cEMBL was honoured to be accepted as an official Intergovernmental Observer Organisation to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) process and to send a delegation to COP26 in Glasgow.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"vf-text--body
