Credit: EMBL.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Imagine a science class where students could take thin slices of carrot doused with a bit of turmeric and ethanol and suddenly see cellular structures outlined in fluorescent green.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A new fluorescence microscopy kit is allowing students to see just that and more as they are now able to view what they previously couldn\u2019t with traditional light microscopes. And, because students actually are building these microscopes from individual parts themselves, they also learn the inner workings and physics concepts underpinning fluorescence microscopy \u2013 something usually reserved for biophysicists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now a standard practice in the life sciences, fluorescence microscopy revolutionised what scientists could see and mark in specimens, allowing them to hone in on specific components.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, despite its central role in contemporary research, fluorescence is not typically covered in secondary school curricula, with few hands-on \u201centry-level\u201d materials available to secondary school teachers to introduce this important method to students. Furthermore, most commercially available fluorescence microscopes are prohibitively costly and often appear as \u201cblack boxes\u201d whose inner workings are mysterious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In collaboration with Robert Prevedel and his group, EMBL\u2019s European Learning Laboratory for the Life Sciences (ELLS) helped create this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/ells\/microscope-in-action\/\">low-cost, research-grade fluorescence microscopy kit<\/a> and comprehensive educational resource that combines concepts from both optics and biology. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/news\/lab-matters\/building-microscopes-to-learn-biology\/\">Microscope in Action<\/a> (MiA) offers ready-made slides and activities that range from preparing and observing samples to analysing data.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn addition to <em>using<\/em> the microscope, they are building it,\u201d said Shweta Gaikwad, an ELLS education officer. \u201cMicroscope in Action employs active learning that accelerates the learning process and infuses participants with excitement.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2021, the team around the project published a paper in <a href=\"https:\/\/meridian.allenpress.com\/the-biophysicist\/article\/2\/3\/55\/471586\/Microscope-in-Action-An-Interdisciplinary\"><em>The Biophysicist<\/em><\/a>, recounting the approach to creating this resource.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhile MiA is primarily aimed at secondary school students, the educational resource is very versatile. It\u2019s actually been used at science festivals, in teacher training courses, and even as an introduction for PhD students here at EMBL,\u201d said Agnes Szmolenszky, head of ELLS. \u201cWhat teachers and trainers appreciate is how it highlights interdisciplinarity and the interconnectedness of scientific thinking \u2013 something increasingly valued in today\u2019s research environment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"\"><!--[vf\/content]-->\n<div class=\"vf-content\">\n\n<div style=\"height:163px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left vf-u-text-color--green vf-text--body vf-text-body--2\"><em>&#8220;The school bell rang and no student wanted to leave the room for the break. A very special moment indeed.
