Credit: Yvonne Yeboah\/EMBL<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It is increasingly apparent that 21<sup>st<\/sup> century global problems cannot be solved without input and cooperation from scientists with diverse research expertise. This requires interdisciplinary thinking and problem-solving, a concept also central to EMBL\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/about\/programme\/\"> new programme, \u2018Molecules to Ecosystems\u2019.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMultidisciplinary research is one of the strongest tools we have to solve today\u2019s grand challenges, including climate change,\u201d said Edith Heard, EMBL Director General, in an opinion piece published in the <em>Financial Times <\/em>in August 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Multidisciplinarity is also factored into EMBL\u2019s state-of-the-art training programmes to encourage PhD and postdoctoral fellows from a wide range of scientific backgrounds.
