Jop, now Group Leader at the Hubrecht Institute in Utrecht, has also received the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek prize for young researchers at the Netherlands Cancer Institute. \u201cI am deeply honoured to find my name among this select group of excellent scientists who have won this award,\u201d Jop says. \u201cThe innovative and out-of-the-box approach to research at EMBL really shaped me as a scientist and was hugely important en route towards independence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Light sheets ahead<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"vf-figure  | vf-figure--align vf-figure--align-inline-start  \"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"vf-figure__image\" src=\"https:\/\/static.embl.de\/aboutus\/alumni\/news\/news_2016\/201604222_jka_lpa\/10_stelzer.jpg\" alt=\"stelzer\"\/><figcaption class=\"vf-figure__caption\"><strong>Ernst Stelzer<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ernst Stelzer<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>EMBL<\/strong>: Group Leader, Cell Biology and Biophysics, 1983-2011<br><strong>2016<\/strong>: Professor in the Life Sciences Department (FB15, IZN) and the Buchmann Institute for Molecular Life Sciences (BMLS) at Goethe University, Frankfurt am Main, Germany<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ernst Stelzer, former EMBL Cell Biology and Biophysics Group Leader, has been selected as the 2016 Lennart Philipson Award winner. The award, which recognises outstanding contributions to translational research and innovation, was given to Ernst for the development and application of new light microscopy methods. Ernst is now Professor at the Goethe University in the Life Sciences Department and in the Buchmann Institute for Molecular Life Sciences, in Frankfurt. \u201cLight sheet-based fluorescence microscopy is the result of more than 25 years of hard work,\u201d Ernst says. \u201cAs a member of several Units, I saw the limits of \u2018flat biology\u2019, the challenges of studying specimens in 3D, and the necessity for time-lapse imaging.
