{"id":10870,"date":"2020-04-24T11:09:00","date_gmt":"2020-04-24T11:09:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/about\/info\/alumni\/?p=10870"},"modified":"2023-06-27T07:42:35","modified_gmt":"2023-06-27T07:42:35","slug":"coffee-with-embl","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/about\/info\/alumni\/blog\/2020\/04\/coffee-with-embl\/","title":{"rendered":"Coffee with EMBL"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/about\/info\/alumni\/events\/coffee-with-embl\/\">Visit the\u00a0<em>Coffee with EMBL\u00a0<\/em>homepage<\/a> to see previous recordings and upcoming events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Alumni from 35 countries meet digitally for the first&nbsp;<em>Coffee with EMBL<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>150 alumni from 35 countries across every continent gathered online for the first&nbsp;<em>Coffee with EMBL&nbsp;<\/em>on Friday 24 April 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This pilot event offered the opportunity for EMBL alumni to hear first hand how EMBL is responding to the COVID-19 pandemic, and to share some of the ways in which they\u2019ve helped to combat the effects of the virus through research and volunteering efforts.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Coffee with EMBL<\/em>&nbsp;provides an accessible, informal online space for members of the EMBL community to connect, share and debate, as well as &nbsp;giving participants access to outstanding scientists and thought leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first session was moderated by EMBL alumnus Angus Lamond, Professor, University of Dundee, and speakers included EMBL Director Matthias Hentze; Head of EMBL Barcelona James Sharpe; Interim Head of EMBL Rome Cornelius Gross; and EMBL Alumni Association Board Chair and Group Leader, Centre for Genomic Regulation&nbsp;Fatima Gebauer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The next&nbsp;<em>Coffee with EMBL&nbsp;<\/em>event, on Friday 8 May, will be a continuation of the discussion around the coronavirus pandemic, with a greater focus on COVID-19 research and related activities being done by the community. There will also be the opportunity to chat with the community shortly before and after the session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.embl.de\/aboutus\/alumni\/news\/news_2020\/20200409_pandemic_responses\/index.html\">Find out what members of the EMBL community are doing to combat COVID-19<\/a> and share your story with the alumni team, or suggest speakers and topics for future&nbsp;<em>Coffee with EMBL<\/em>events:&nbsp;<a href=\"mailto:alumni@embl.org\">alumni@embl.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Quotes from alumni participants<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was a fantastic meeting.
