On 21 November, the EMBL Alumni Association (EAA) board held their 22nd meeting at EMBL-EBI in Hinxton, followed by a reception for staff and UK-resident EMBL alumni.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Janet Thornton, EMBL-EBI Director, welcomed the 60 participants to the new South Building \u2013 which houses state-of-the-art training facilities and the ELIXIR Hub.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis was a superb opportunity to meet EMBL-EBI staff, understand more about their mission, achievements and future plans, and to experience the inspiring new South Building,\u201d EAA board Chair Giulio Superti-Furga said in thanks. \u201cThis is a truly multidisciplinary approach to deciphering genomic information. We will take this message home to our institutes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Janet underlined the value of alumni to EMBL, saying \u201cour alumni are our best possible ambassadors, we encourage you to keep in touch and hope you will help us to celebrate EMBL-EBI\u2019s 20th anniversary on 12th June 2014.\u201d The reception ended with Janet conducting a guided tour of the building and its beautiful spaces including the Kendrew Lecture Theatre, two dedicated training suites and collaboration space for industry and translation.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

\u201cEMBL-EBI introduced me to working on big data sets, which I have continued ever since. \u201cI now work on genome-wide associations between more than 50 quantitative traits and whole genome sequences of more than 3500 individuals in the UK10K project. This genotype\/phenotype resource will be an order of magnitude deeper than the genetic-only 1000 Genomes Project data set for Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I work next door to the new South building, so have lived with the building site for just over a year. It\u2019s great to see it finished while catching up with old EMBL-EBI colleagues.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n
