The day was structured around scientific talks from past and current EMBLers, covering topics as diverse as drug development, prevention of disease outbreaks, the ethical challenges of CRISPR-Cas and the successful collaboration between academia and industry. Whether in industry, academia or government agencies, the speakers and audience were all enthusiastic about the energy that EMBL had given them, whether it was as a predoc just a few years ago, or as a staff scientist some thirty-odd years ago.

While the level of science displayed in the talks was indubitably a testament to the scientific standing of the EMBL alumni community, what made the day special was the richness of the personal exchanges that happened over coffee breaks and nibbles.

The day ended with plans for the next meetings to be held in Basel where the largest number of alumni are based, followed by Geneva.

Anne-Flore Laloe

Did you know?
EMBL has 232 alumni in Switzerland of which 35 are Swiss. 139 work in academia and 46 in industry.
