\u201cThere are networks and there are networks – the crucial difference is the trust component<\/em>.\u201d This was the message of keynote speaker Rudi Dekeyser at the first EMBL-VIB alumni meeting hosted at VIB Gent on Friday 24th October.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

Rudi, now working in Venture Capital in the Netherlands, was VIB co-founder and Director of Tech Transfer from 1995-2012. He presented the Chinese concept of \u201cGuanxi\u201d to the 50+ EMBL and VIB alumni and staff as \u201ca network of people you can trust,\u201d adding that \u201calumni can play this role as people who have worked in our institutions and know our culture.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This was the underlying message of the meeting, organised in the context of EMBL\u2019s 40th anniversary. EMBL and VIB had joined forces for this event in order to offer their alumni and staff a broader network of life scientists in Belgium with similar institutional cultures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jo Bury, managing director of VIB, enthusiastically welcomed the participants to the VIB facilities as \u201crole models for our future scientists as well as \u2018excellence brand\u2019 ambassadors who can help expand the visibility and reputation of our institutes.\u201d He called upon all VIB alumni to actively participate in the establishment and growth of the VIB Alumni Association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lieve Ongena, VIB Sr Science Policy Manager, explained the focus of this first meeting. Due to VIB\u2019s strong record in technology transfer and the status of the campus as a Biotech hub in Flanders, tech transfer was the obvious subject focus. The programme included a tour of the campus where bio-incubators, bio-accellerators, spin off companies as well as large biotech companies work swiftly together in one location.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

Mehrnoosh Rayner, EMBL Head of Alumni Relations, presented the areas in which EMBL alumni have been supporting and continue to support EMBL: sending young scientists to the Laboratory, opening doors to EMBL leavers, contributing to EMBL courses and conferences, and facilitating EMBL partnerships, memberships and sponsorships. \u201cThis is a mutually beneficial relationship, and EMBL supports its alumni by keeping them connected, visible and heard in the life science community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

EMBL and VIB alumni, Barbara Janssen, Brian Sproat, Christian Desaintes and Lennart Martens set the networking scene with inspiring presentations of their careers, which was followed by a dedicated networking session and a five-course buffet dinner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The atmosphere was so lively and the feedback so positive, that plans for the 2015 EMBL-VIB alumni meeting were already being made for VIB Leuven before the day was over.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n
