{"id":3882,"date":"2021-07-27T10:44:08","date_gmt":"2021-07-27T10:44:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/about\/info\/alumni\/?page_id=3882"},"modified":"2021-07-28T09:15:34","modified_gmt":"2021-07-28T09:15:34","slug":"noreen-murray","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/about\/info\/alumni\/community\/obituaries\/noreen-murray\/","title":{"rendered":"Noreen Murray"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"vf-grid | vf-grid__col-3\"><div class=\"vf-grid__col--span-2\"><!--[vf\/content]-->\n<div class=\"vf-content\">\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Noreen Murray, former EMBL postdoctoral fellow, passed away on 12 May 2011, aged 76.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Noreen, an EMBL alumna and Alumni Association board member from 2003\u20135, led the development of recombinant DNA technology, research that has had a significant impact on modern biology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She worked at EMBL between 1980 and 82, where her research on lambda vectors was rapidly adopted by researchers across the world and is still widely used today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Noreen joined the University of Edinburgh in 1988 and continued to work at the bench long after her formal retirement in 2001.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the course of her career, her work was recognised by many prestigious awards, including fellowships of the Royal Societies of Edinburgh and London, membership of EMBO, honorary degrees from a host of world-class universities as well as a CBE for services to science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Noreen is survived by her husband, Sir Kenneth Murray.
