I discovered the atmosphere of a truly international institute, filled mostly by young PIs with different cultures and approaches of science. I never forgot these wonderful years and still today, I am always happy to go back for whichever reasons, smelling the buildings and meetings friends. I guess it is now time for me to regularise this relationship and to join the &#8216;Friends of EMBL\u2019\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div><!--[vf\/content]-->\n<div class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What has it enabled so far?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Since its establishment in 2015, the programme has enabled and contributed to projects of high scientific and social relevance which include:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In-person and virtual tours of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/about\/world-of-molecular-biology\/\">EMBL World of Molecular Biology<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/about\/info\/trec\/mobile-labs\/\">Mobile laboratories<\/a> for the TREC initiative (TRaversing European Coastlines)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/about\/info\/equality-diversity\/projects\/leadership-and-excellence-for-aspiring-postdocs\/\">Mentorship for women in science postdoctoral fellows<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Funds to support talented scientists who could otherwise not afford a visit to EMBL through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/about\/info\/scientific-visitor-programme\/\">Scientific Visitor Programme&nbsp;<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A corporate winter school for predoctoral fellows&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/about\/info\/alumni\/make-a-difference\/give\/environmental-research-initiative\/#vf-tabs__section-40c35d5f-c9fc-44cc-9339-ba124b2e7f2a\">Catalyst projects for the Environmental Research Initiative (ERI)<\/a>&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/ells\/microscope-in-action\/\">Fluorescence microscopy for pupils<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These projects emerge from scientific developments and opportunities with great potential which are not covered by the EMBL budget, opening doors and offering tremendous value to EMBL, the life sciences community and society at large.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why support it?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Funds raised collectively by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/about\/info\/support\/join-the-friends-of-embl\/current-members-of-the-friends-of-embl\/\">supporters of the Friends of EMBL programme<\/a> are actively driving innovative projects chosen by the EMBL Director General every year. Those selected represent the areas of greatest scientific and societal opportunity and need, enabling EMBL to go even further and even faster in its aim to make the world a better place.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.embl.org\/about\/info\/support\/join-the-friends-of-embl\/\">&nbsp;<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Alumni supporters include<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Wilhelm J.
