Partner Universities
EMBL in general and its EMBL International PhD Programme in particular strive to contribute to the European academic landscape. We want to help break boundaries and make bonds between national education systems. We aim to meet the highest standards for the education and training of PhD students in the molecular life sciences in Europe and the world, and seek innovative solutions to current bottlenecks. In this mission, the EMBL International PhD Programme sees itself as a strong and loyal partner of the universities in its member states, which share this vision.

Our PhD students are here as ambassadors of their home universities, and they are ambassadors of the EMBL in their home countries. Many of them wish that their PhD degrees reflect this dual affiliation. Based on EMBL's authority to grant PhD degrees and in response to our students' interest, we have initiated a Partnership Programme with some of the most highly respected universities in the different European countries. An important aspect of this partnership is that EMBL's PhD students can obtain 'Joint PhD degrees' from us together with our partners.

A longer term ambition is that the partnerships, which are currently bilateral between EMBL and specific universities, will grow into a network for the optimal recruitment, training and career support of its PhD students.

We are happy that the universities listed below have already become EMBL's Partner Universities, and look forward to the joining of more universities in the near future. We are also open to suggestions from universities who share our goals and vision.

Currently, the EMBL has established partnerships for a joint PhD degree with the following universities:
