Joint PhD Degrees with National Universities Statutes
Aims of Joint PhD Degrees with National Universities
The EMBL wishes to contribute to the internationalisation of academic degrees and to mutually beneficial co-operation with the national universities. The EMBL International PhD Programme has been granted the right to award the PhD, by its Council representing the Member States. On the basis of this right and in the spirit of co-operation with national universities, the 'Statutes of the EMBL International PhD Programme' provide the possibility of awarding PhD degrees jointly with national universities.

Procedures for Joint PhD Degrees
When PhD students of the EMBL International PhD Programme register with a national university to obtain a joint EMBL/University doctorate, the principal standards and procedures defined in the "Statutes of the EMBL International PhD Programme" are maintained. The procedures may be adapted as necessary to take into account the procedures of the respective national university. In particular, the Evaluation of Thesis and PhD Examination procedures of the respective national university may be followed, provided that EMBL faculty members participate in the evaluation and examination process.

On the part of the EMBL, successful candidates will receive a PhD certificate to indicate the joint EMBL/University doctorate.

Prof. Fotis C. Kafatos, Director General EMBL
Prof. Louise Johnson, Professor, Oxford University, Chair EMBL Scientific Advisory Committee.
