EICAT, the EMBL International Centre for Advanced Training, coordinates integrated training activities for scientists at different levels. EICAT is the landmark representing one of the Laboratory's core missions: the provision of advanced training.
EICAT, headquartered at the main EMBL laboratory
in Heidelberg, Germany, coordinates the different
elements of advanced training at all five EMBL sites,
integrating their respective experience and know-how,
creating synergies, promoting training at EMBL and
making available its expertise to other institutions
in the EMBL member states. |

EICAT fosters
information exchange between the respective EMBL
training branches. Among these are the International
PhD Programme, the Postdoctoral
Programme and the Collaborative
Training Programme. It also includes the highly
successful EMBL
Courses, Conferences and Workshops Programme
and the EMBL
Science and Society Programme. EICAT hosts the
European
Laboratory for the Life Sciences [ELLS], an
education facility for high school teachers, whose
mission is to bridge the gap between research and
classrooms. The Scholars' Programme and the Visiting
Scientists' Programme offer principal investigators
as well as postdocs and graduate students, respectively,
from other institutions the opportunity to associate
with a specific group or unit of the Laboratory
for a period of study, reflection, writing, exposure
to ongoing research, etc.
EICAT promotes joint advanced training activities between the five EMBL sites, between EMBL and its sister institution EMBO, and between the Laboratory and research organizations and networks in the EMBL member states.
EICAT thus pursues a dual mission: to provide first-rate training for the scientists who work at EMBL, and to serve as a European hub of advanced training for those who primarily work elsewhere.
