The EMBL is one of the most renowned scientific
laboratories in Europe. Scientific excellence
and service to the scientific community are its
principal goals. Those are mirrored, among others,
by the extensive Visitors Programme that enables
scientists and students from all over the world
to benefit from new technologies and modern equipment
at the five EMBL sites.
Visitors come to the EMBL for the purpose of doing
research in collaboration with the EMBL staff
or doing their own research, taking advantage
of the EMBL environment. Scientists may come to
receive advanced training in a specific area,
or they may participate in long-term collaborations.
Advanced training is one of EMBL's core missions.
It is realised, among other things, in the Visiting
Scientists Programme which is part of the
EMBL International Centre for Advanced Training
[EICAT]. Its aim is to provide training opportunities
for advanced scientists. The following visitor's
categories are integrated in the Visiting Scientists
Programme:
Visiting Scholars
Senior scientists and sabbatical visitors who wish to be associated with a specific group, unit or the laboratory as a whole, for a period of study, reflection, writing and exposure to ongoing research.
Visiting Scientists
Scientists at the postgraduate level including visiting postdoctoral fellows who are integrated in the work of a research group for the duration of the visit in order to perform joint experiments, work on a specific project or discuss possible collaborations with members of the EMBL faculty. They may also receive special training during their stay or evaluate new research potential for their own institutions.
Visiting PhD Students
PhD students who are not members of the EMBL International PhD Programme. They are registered with an external institution for their PhD. They generally wish to benefit from EMBL technologies and methods for specific parts of their thesis.
Visits of more than 6 months need prior approval of the Dean of Graduate Studies. The maximum total training period at EMBL, including any extensions, must be less than half of their entire PhD period.
Diploma Students
Undergraduate students from universities or professional schools pursuing practical work for their diploma / masters thesis [or equivalent] at EMBL.
The maximum total training period at EMBL, including any extensions, may not exceed one year.
Trainees
Undergraduate students from universities or professional schools receiving scientific, technical or administrative training at EMBL. Trainees must be at least 18 years old to be eligible for training at EMBL.
The maximum total training period at EMBL, including any extensions, may not exceed one year.
Courses and Conferences and Seminars
EMBL hosts a number of events every year at each
of its sites. Seminars, courses, conferences and
workshops are organized all year round. Teaching
laboratories, seminar rooms and lecture theatres
are available at all of its locations.
Science
and Society
Established in 1998, the principal aim of the science
and society initiative at EMBL is to promote a better
and broader understanding of the growing social
and cultural relevance of the life sciences. We
organize a variety of activities and events where
members of our scientific community, scholars from
other disciplines, as well as members of the public,
meet to engage in a dialogue.
Science
for Schools
The European Learning Laboratory for the Life Sciences
[ELLS] fosters a new type of interaction between
teachers and scientists. We bring in teachers to
receive hands-on training in science, and scientists
who are enthusiastic about helping teachers and
students. Interested? Contact
