Challenging post-doc opportunities in RNA research/Molecular Medicine [PDF]
From bench to bedside - and back
One of the biggest challenges and greatest opportunities for life sciences research in the beginning 21st century is to develop an integrated Molecular Medicine research strategy. The Medical Faculty of Heidelberg University and the European Molecular Biology Laboratory [EMBL] in Heidelberg have both strongly contributed to making Heidelberg one of the premier centers of life sciences research in the world. Now, both institutions have decided to meet the challenge and to jointly build and develop an integrated research activity in Molecular Medicine: The Molecular Medicine Partnership Unit [MMPU]. As a hallmark of MMPU research, all projects are under the joint leadership of the cooperating Uni-HD and EMBL partners, resulting in research teams headed by two cooperating PI's.
Starting with dedicated laboratory space on the Medical Campus and under joint leadership, the MMPU is assembling an international team of molecular research-oriented MD's, PhD's, PhD students and technicians. The cooperation with the EMBL includes participation in all of EMBL's research activities, access to its scientific core facilities and affiliation with the EMBL International PhD Programme. The research philosophy aims at the molecular understanding of the basis of human diseases, its applications in diagnosis and therapy, and a feedback from 'bedside medicine' into the research laboratory. The current research theme places emphasis on the diseases of childhood, particularly blood disorders, cancers, and chronic lung diseases, in particular cystic fibrosis.
Organisation of the MMPU
Molecular Biology Laboratory [EMBL] established the Molecular Medicine Partnership Unit that is staffed by both institutions and co-directed by Andreas Kulozik from Heidelberg University and by Matthias Hentze from EMBL. Andreas and Matthias have successfully worked together on diseases of RNA metabolism for many years, and are dedicated to the success of the MMPU.
The success of their first MMPU group has led to a recent extention of the MMPU, which will further strengthen the link between basic and translationel research in molecular medicine. In the beginning of 2006, the MMPU was joined by the following three new groups:
The MMPU has an international orientation, with team meetings, an attractive seminar programme, mini-symposia and other teaching activities in English. It is located on the Medical Campus of Heidelberg University, within walking distance from the German Cancer Research Center and the Center for Molecular Biology of Heidelberg University [ZMBH], and a short drive from EMBL. The MMPU is supported by the University of Heidelberg and EMBL. Most research activities are financed by grant support from several research agencies. In the future, the MMPU hopes to receive further support to fertilize its development. |
