Promoting women in Science: SET-Routes
The Alumni Association is working together with EMBL in its collaboration with EMBO and CERN to awaken young girls' interests in science and to encourage young women graduates to pursue careers in Science, Engineering and Technology – SET. It does so in supporting them with EMBL's network of alumnae scientists from PhD students to institute directors, who are then invited to serve as School or University Ambassadors in their countries.

The EMBL Alumni Association is delighted to launch the John Kendrew Young Scientist Award in 2007. The award is open to young scientists who have been, within the past five years, members of the EMBL International PhD Programme or EMBL postdoctoral fellows, and are registered members of the Alumni Association. It is intended to recognise excellence in either scientific research or in science communication after leaving EMBL.
The award, which is named after the first Director General of EMBL, Sir John Kendrew, will consist of a cash prize of €1,000 plus a further €1,000 towards the cost of travel and accommodation, as the winner will present a lecture at EMBL Heidelberg or one of the outstations. The prize has been generously sponsored by the EMBL Pensioners' Association for an initial period of three years.
The application deadline for 2008 is Friday, 12 September 2008. A decision on the winner will be made at the Alumni Board meeting in November 2008, and will be made available on this website and in the EMBL newsletter thereafter.

Swedish Fellowship
The Alumni Association was able to offer a Swedish scientist, Johan Ledin, the opportunity to carry out postdoctoral research for 2.5 years at EMBL through a generous grant from The Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research [2004-2007]. The Association is using the Swedish example to pursue funds for similar fellowships for scientists from other member states and will post these on this website in due course.
